It *is* very 70s (which isnt bad by itself - my music knowledge ends about ´84  ???), it is a classic, granted, and it is even great to relive memeories by listening once every 5 yrs to it (from my POV). It is too Pop for my taste, lyrics are for the poetically inhibitated IMHO...  ;D

Incredible but true: I have tried now for 1.5(!) hours to find a vid on the net that plays the original version of this song, literally impossible... All out there is live and interesting, but lacks the fine arrangements and the sound quality of the studio version and is... crap.  >:(

I've solved the Flash problem [load IE from the icon at the bottom of the page and it uses 32-bit mode which Adobe Flash can handle] and now see all of your nice videos.  Thanks so much for your help!  I've just watched Einsteurzende Neubaten live at the Palast der Republik movie to celebrate.  their music isn't for everyone [banging empty olive oil tins on pieces of metal] but it's worth a chance, if you're open to industrial music.

Seems we were able to solve the problem, here for others who have the same thingy not working:

In Vista, IE7 32 Bit is installed by default. Check the Program Files (x86) folder for Internet Explorer. It is there and you run the executable file to have a 32 Bit browser.

Some ppl reported that they could not get the IE7 to shortcut to 32-bit, her the solution if that is your case:



If you forget what browser you're in you can always check under Help->About.and if it doesn't specifically say "64-bit Edition" then it's not.

Last, Flash doesn't necessarily work on 32 bit editions either unless UAC is turned off.

Another solution would be to run Linux, there Adobe has released the 64-bit flash player already last month.

In Alans case the click on the tiny icon at the bottom next to the start icon worked to install IE in 32-bit mode, so: SOLVED

Now he can enjoy this thread...  :D

and to follow up:  we tried to dl Fire Fox in 32-bit mode (something which is supposedly used to 'fix' this Vista 64-bit processor problem), open IE in 32-bit mode via fiddling with the files, we dl'd Silver-something-or-other via Netflix (the US site for watching movies on-line) which some said worked and nothing worked until I simply opened IE with the icon on the bottom tool-bar.  the simplest solution to the most frustrating computer problem in some time.

Had some friends (all either ex or current) here tonight for dinner: 1 ARG, 2 ESP, 1 (wife of) GDR, 1 BRD, 1 UK and showed them the site and, of cause, this thread.

Don't know if you know the whole pun of 'Go Franco Un-American' from that song.  Franco-American is a popular brand for canned food; I think of it as kid's food and used to love it as a kid.

After a short confy with the blokes today we agreed we never got that one, for Spanish (and Spanish Speakers) Franco stands for something else and was understood by everybody present as such in the song, w/o a clue to the pun you mentioned: USA (EE.UU in spanish) had always gone great length (in the cold war probably thought he was a "natural" ally) to support El Generalissimo... They celebrated the 25 yrs of facisim here as if it had been their own triumph (at least so according to NO-DO, the propaganda news during the dictatorship).

Interestingly, up to today, the Spanish "Infanteria Naval" still has the same organization, equipment and even uniforms as the US Marines (and different from all the other forces). Traditions die hard...  ;D

Turns out I got it all wrong, have to go back tomorrow, the virthday is Monday (so celebs at 2400 sunday night).

Re: The concert, great night, dancing myself out (one was the song of the vid). Molly could not turn up as he is with a flu, but Robert (the sax guy in the vid) took over. Drums were run by Patrick Shanahan, x drummer of "New Riders of the Purple Sage", he lives next door (= 4 km, here at the Med a** of the world).

  What an intriguing set of artists doing "My Funny Valentine."  Most excellent.  The best one has to be Frank.  Of course.  It was fun to compare the styles.

  Naturally, King Crimson, and the absolute classic "In the Court of the Crimson King" would need to be included.  They are right up there with Argent and their amazing "Hold Your Head High," one of my absolute favorites.

Just listening live to the Spanish National Music Awards Ceremony (XIII Edicion Premios de la Musica, big thing here like the grammies or oscars) which hits a lot of angles we have covered in this thread already.

I got intrigued by what of one of the laudators said about a well known "nationalist" musician (and NOTE that "nation" in Spanish has two angles and the word itself will only be used in a political sense, else it is either: "Tierra" = "Earth", as a symbol of where you got raised and therefore belong to - like motherland in Russian-, and "Pueblo" = "People", the society you belong to as you  have "drank" its culture (referring to the mothers milk), like "Volk" in German, both much stronger in meaning than the English translation can transport):

The laudator said: "Who loves his "Earth" will always love the "Earth " of others. Who loves his people, will intringensintly love *all* other peoples. And who devotes his effort to producing music for both his "Earth" and his  "People" will do so knowing that the future of both depends always on shared memories with the others..."

Well, they are not gone, they are still *very* active (and as I know that the identity will be revealed in the video I will not try to hide it any longer): The from my POV best ever Live and Show Band (though they call themselves the "Worst Band Of The World") is still performing (since ´98 with - nebst other lossses - a new singer and a new lead guitarrist), is on a new European Tour and will this summer perform in Palma de Mallorca, already looking forward to it (I have seen them about 10x live between ´88 and ´98, in small clubs and on big stages, and each concert was a blast. It looks, tough, that I will have to pay black marked prices for the concert her, all 60.000 tickets were sold on Friday within 1.5 hours... :( - not bad for a 500k inhabitants island):

Now, how come that a band that does nothing but covers - though so well that some of the orignial authors could still learn a bit from them - can sell out so quickly and that people are actually fighting to see their concerts?

Well, you will have to join me on a time warp back to ´87 when nobody knew them (me neither):

At this time they did (from my POV) rather boring stuff like the following (and all non-live videos from here on are directed by Aki Kaurismäki who obviously saw their potential much earlier than the rest of the world; all screeplays allso by him). The protagonist of the video is (much missed after 1997) Mato Valtonen, as you can see the hairdoes were not yet a "brand" sign and the shoes were still normal...:

This all changed when Kaurismäki built the background for the legend in ´89 as can be seen in this nice and hilarious clip (which actually is from 1992, but as it fit in the timeline that I want to present allow me this small lie, I will rectify later in the post in detail):

The clip provides "the Finnish history from 1952 to 1969" and begins with the birth of the protagonist (Mato Valtonen, LC lead singer). The combo short film/music video describes typical events of the main character's life: From his school years to marriage, from the daily grind of working life to the routines of farming and his father's death, ending melancholically (how surprising Kaurismäki  ;D) in a scene where the main character gives up farming as it no longer provides a living. The rest of the Leningrad Cowboys - as well as the in Finland ever present Vodka - appear in many parts of it in a supporting role, hairdo, uniforms and shoes long established as a "brand/trademark" by then...:

1988 or ´89 (do not recall anymore) was also the first time those guys entered into my musical hoizon, I saw them in a club/disco in Kassel/Germany (Musiktheater, for anybody who knows the scene, well worth another thread) performing for abut 1k ppl for about 3 hours, and it was probably one of the best live concert parties I ever remember.

Once I had them on my screen, I kept following the news about them (not much internet then), until in 1989 a cincema film by Aki Kaurismäki came out (that is an absolute must-see), "Leningrad Cowboys go America", a road movie and music film in the best Blues Brothers tradition but "The European Way" and on top of that in the typical dry Kaurismäki Finnish humor.

Now, I do not know what you think about the Blues Brothers as film, but it was one of my favorites always, with it´s dry dialogues, the excellent music and musicians and the "no compomise" life style it featured for me it was (and keeps being) deep philosopy. In the ´80s, when I still was rich, I abut once a year would buy all tickets for cinema that had it on, invite all my friends, pay some extra money to the guy who worked there to turn up the volume, and then we would have a party...

DISCLAIMER: If you do not like music films or road movies you can safely skip this part from here til the next appearance of a line of "-----" as I am going to present you with some highlights of the film, almost all with a great music piece, though)...

Same with this film, it had me absolutely fascinated: Same dryness, same great music and musicians (Jim Jarmush, Tom Waits and many others both as actors as well as musicians), no place for compromises and a deep philosophical angle, also in the same way hilarious (though even more absurd in many aspects).

The background story is about a "Russian" (hence the bit about "Finnish pretending to be Russians" in the beginning of my post) band that is playing Russian music trying to get famous, but get rejected by a producer as he wants to hear "American" music (this was ´89 after all!), so they decide to leave Siberia and - pretending they were American all along (their "Manager" speas a kind of English) - to make a buck in the states.

They have a few problems to overcome: One of their buddies (the lead gutiarrist) had a little too much vodka and got deepfrozen in the tundra, but as they know about the symptoms they expect him to wake one day that they find the sun and can rapidly heat him up and so have to ake him along (in a coffin filled with ice cubes - and beer); the distance from Siberia through Alaska to the states is long, and they have only 700 dollars... Well, you can imagine (or not  :D, how it goes from there): Lots of citations of the Blues Brothers idea, but a completely different take...

It is in this film that the "Leningrad Cowwboys Legend" really started, the hairdoes, the shoes and the face of the manager became a trademark...

These just some impressions...

Of the original band members from the film Sakari Kuosmanen left soon after and has pursued a music and acting career in  Finland, appearing in many of Aki Kaurismaki's movies. Of the 10 original band members only Silu Seppälä, Sakke Järvenpää, Mauri Sumén & Mato Valtonen were still around by the time of the 1994 for the sequel, Leningrad Cowboys Meet Moses (like all sequels the film didnt catch me as the firstl, but the music was again spectacular...).

It was after the film that the band got really famous and great (actually, "megalomanic" might be my choice of words for what happened), espeically after they got sponsored by Nokia: There was a Nokia "Leningrad Cowboys" mobile, branded beer and vodka, comic books, t-shirts that glowed in the dark, earrings and so on, AFAIK the contract was the biggest ever sponosring for a band by a company.

From the Nokia Balalaika Show 1994 in Berlin that I had the chance to attend  :D (with the Russian Red Army Choir as explained in the next paragaph) the absolutely smashing performance (which makes clear why I call it the best ever live band) of

Just before that, in 1993 the produced the "Total Balalaika Show" where they had the excellent idea to join up with the Red Army Choir, they performed to 70,000 fans and the concert in Helsinki was just electric. The concert was performed in the historic Senate Square. This was where thousands of people came to see the body of most famous Finnish leader, Mannerheim who was head of the Finnish Army during the 2nd World War when the country fought valiantly against its deadly enemy, Russia. And here, some 50 years later, this Finnish band were performing with the Russian Red Army. It was an unforgettable experience. Rock n'roll that day really did stop the traffic.

  The re-make by Limp Bizkit is sort of a melodic sleep-walk through the song.  The original was edgy, angry, and by The Who.  You couldn't improve on that. 

  I think The Who's version is much better, but then I am dating myself by prefering The Who over Limp Bizkit.

  Also, for another amazing classic song, John Entwistle wrote "Had Enough" for The Who, and so much of it rings applicable to today, even though the song was written in 1978.  I'd post it but don't really know how for this forum.  Great songs, those two.

Man, I almost died laughing at the Zidane video to the tune of Rammstein's, "Du Hasst Mich." 

My family and I were watching the game, but decided to head out to a restaurant to eat, instead of watching it to the end.  We were more hungry than interested.  When we got to the restaurant, guess what was on the TV?  Yep, the game, so I was half watching out of the corner of my eye, when suddenly......The Infamous Head Butt!  I couldn't believe what I had just seen.  I had to see it several times, in slow motion, to finally have it dawn on me what Zidane had done.  Amazing.  As for that video, I better not watch it too many times in a row, or I'll need to be hospitalized.  That is lethally funny.

Long time no music... or too many vids in one post which make it hard to listen to the whole post...

Probably it is just my taste, but the way I address a music post is *selecting* the "example" - or what I judge to be the "best" piece from an artist I want to feature/present because I am intrigued, and not add up the ones that I find equally good (if they do not convolute as part of the thread, i.e. "illustrating" a narrated history, as in my "Leningrad Coboys" post). I always fear that the superficial reader - while basically interested in music or its history - when having to chose from many pieces in one post will always - Murphy´s Law! - pick the one that least suits his taste and will not more than superficially check the rest, if at all...

This said, as I still not have finished my promised "Spanish Current Music" thread and realize that it will be long (though connected with a narrated history), I will break it up into bits, here goes #1:

In the last 20 years or so in Spain has developed a very interesting Rock/Pop/R+B/Fink scene that does not only produce very dancable music, but also impresses with great artists, perfectly poem-like lyrics and have nothing to do with any "Castings", those are genuines.

As I now do not want to go into detials yet, check out this (Brasilian!) guy by the name of Youssou N' Dour (better known by his artist name: Carlhinos Brown), who set a trend (that influenced and joined with some earlier others that I am going to talk abut in another post), and produced a very rocky, funky and disco dancable sound in the mid ´90s, which many bands in Spain today (partially) copy.

I will present the same song in three takes, first the studio version (from 1997), which, after listening into the first minute will not fined really revealling. The reason: Carlhinos Brown works live magic, this is where the fun is. Accordingly, I will post as 2nd vid the one when the song was first presented, at the "Heineken Concerts", 1995, so you can see how much more "drive" (drummer beating early, in this case even pushed by Carlhinos Brown´s guitar) the piece has. Last, what happens in the audience, from a short 1 min clip from a Barcelona concert of Carlhinos Brown... Enjoy! (you may safely turn the volume up a bit).

Again, you will have to wait for my in-depth dissection of modern Spanish Rock/Pop, but here another appetizer (and you can already memorize the name of the protagonists of this band "La Marina" and "La Susi", as they will appear various times and at different ages in my thread, the latter is one of the key figures in Spanish current music):

This is a straightforward Flamenco band (and no, they do not the Northern European "cleaned" versions of groups like "Gypsy Kings"  nono, but the real thing), the modern version (the only folk music that has evolved and is less than dead, in Europe), they carry you away. It is a a nine-ppl band from Barcelona, who describe their style as "jipjop flamenkillo" (hip-hop with a little flamenco). They sold over 100,000 copies of their self-produced Barí album, and hav received several awards, among these the BBC Radio 3 World Music Award for Europe in 2004 (having also been nominated in 2003) and the Latin Grammy 2008.

They have no label backing, they made their own -  "La Fábrica de Colores" -  to get complete artistic freedom for their album "Barí", dodging the pressure they received from their record company Edel Records for their debut album "Vengue".

Well, been researching dead muical geniuses of the last 50 yrs for some hours now, additionally working on my "Contemporary Spanish Popular Music" thread, and in the end I simply could not go on anymore, exhausted.

So, to find peace of mind, back to classical:

Starting out with some light Grieg (Peer Gynt, Hall of the Mountain King) to change chip and get in the mood, then made it to JSB, Toccata and Fuge in D-minor, probably the best meditative piece I ever have heard: The beauty of the sound, combined with the beauty of the (mathematical) architecture and the rhythm patterns created by the 5 voices (what we call arrangement today, Fugue starts about 1:35 into the piece) had me totally captured.

Imagining that the guy simply *improvised* that on a sunday morning in church (that is what "toccata" means) stretches my imagination (and respect) for what the human being is able to achieve to the max...

Enjoy! (best heard when you have time to listen with volume turned up to what your equipment/house/neighbours allow, 5+ brandies or equivalent dose of other drugs and nobody around to disturb you for 12+ minutes)

Wow, coincidences:

I did some research on Flamenoc this early morning (0430J, we have only game or music shows on telly when I get up) about whom I think is the last true "cantaor" (= Flamenco Singer) alive, and realized he had (as so many of the Flamenco crowd in general, part of the job) done a crossover experiment with Rock in the ´90s.

Result: Truly Hypnotic! Meditative!

(...just FDR, I had listened to it a few weeks ago already, and did not like it.

After now having listened to both the original and other pieces of the singer more than several times - the Andalú he speaks is not easy to understand - , I find suddenly I am addicted:

Enrique Morente captured the essence of the song - probably because he worked so close together with LC for many years and because I first did just interpret him as singer and not as artist...- which he truly *is* ...).

Probably the beginning of Techno? They were geniouses, way ahead of their times...

well, watching Zidane is like contemplating a "Van Gogh" or a "Rembrandt", or listening to Bach or Beethoven... :) And, whatever he earned, except for the dsigrace in his last match (the headbutt, also visible in the first vid), he never made me angry even when he alone beat Barca... :)

Not unknown to happen, my friend, if you load your RAM with lots of pics (pics take lots of memory).

My recommendation (from having been burnt several times that way):

- use Firefox and use msg preview (that saves content every time you preview, even after a crash Firefox will restore it)
- OR compose offline (saving every step, of cause) and then just post the result
- OR post in the staff section to compose (under a "draft" prefix to the title), editing your post all along as often as you like, and only when finished post to the section you want it seen.

The dark side of soldiering: How could have anyone in his sane mind, whatever his political stance, conciously have killed this great poet, Noble Prize winner, a flag for Chile, just because of orders, in the coup? And "...doing it for my country!..." ??

Yes, I agree with Rattler on that.  However, none can really stand up to the original.  Yes, yes, I am showing my age on that, but the original was so starkly sad and poignant that you could feel the pain and loneliness.  The instruments were solo as well, even enhancing how alone the characters in the lyrics really were.

Sorry to disagree (that´s why we call it discussion board), but Black Symphony (and I was ot aware ther was a studio version???) is their greatest work ever from my POV, I have not bught the DVD, but listened to a lot of snippets ovr the years.

Well, as it was (is) raining here all day and I am sitting in front of the comp since more than 16 hours now (with lunch and later siesta break) I am listening to stuff from my Vinyl collection which brings me back to page 1 of this thread (and it was a response to Koen´s ELO then), some more great mixes of lyrics, guitar solos and, most important in this case, *arrangements*:



A typical case this for music I did not at all like the first time I heard it but that after repeating a few times had me immersed and addicted: Subtly surreal lyrics, strange themes for songs, great musicians individually, a new take on rock and jazz at that time (´72-´82), Lady and gentlemen, one of the all time best (voice) arrangers, Donald Fagan and his "Steely Dan"!

For starters "Haitian Divorce" (´72?), which (while not one of the best pieces) surely combines all the mentioned above and so hopefully will set the pace (you will have time enough to give a quick look at the lyrics, the song only starts after 0:35 - ...ah, that wah-wah in combo with the talk box!  :champ:):

Now, for something completely different:

Whenever I feel I need a boost I inevitably fall back on Beethoven, directed by Karajan: While IMHO his reputation as director is slightly overdone from a strict musical POV (even more so now as he is dead), he does deserve it because of two methods he introduced to classics:

1. He was bass centered and somehow understood that modern (20th century) audiences living with radio and tv were/are indoctrinated to bass heavy voices, ads, music, etc. and took the right conclusion: Double, triple, auadruple the bass section (contrabass, celli, violas and the big drums) independently from what was written in the partiture.

2. He discovered the power of the image and had a basic understanding of the visualisation of music: While other as well directors had their two three TC cameras set up and taped themselves (google "Bernstein Beethovens 9th": Same time, great director - probably even better than Karajan - , but the difference is abysmal), he discovered and contracted one of the (now) most famous camera men: Michael Ballhaus, and let him do all the visual representatin of his work (as an ex photographer and profound fan of Ballhaus incredible capacity of imaginative vision and visual creation - my favorite scene is a 8+ minutes one camera shot of a conversatio between two people in Fassbinders "World on a Wire", where he moves in, out, surrounds, circumferes, changes from totale to spot, etc, for all that time w/o one single cut). Ballhaus developed photographers vision into moving pictures and showed every angle about Karajan: His genie, his ego-centrism bodering on madness, his German precision and addiction to detail, his vanity, and his art, the top German musicions doing "slave labour" literally as Karajan asked them to, condensing it all in some almost black and white pictures, long lenses giving a pictoresque density unknown before in concert cinematography.

That is what is on today as I feel down and close to burn-oput with so much stuff to take care of that I am losing the big picture (sorry, as YT only allowed 10 min when this was posted they had to split it in two parts): Beethoven (who else when you need ome assertion?), 2nd movement of th 9th, directed by Karajan, filmed by Ballhaus (and nope: It cannot be the first movement... It is here that you see the true Beethovian spirit come through, the energy and power, the discipline and the orgasmic details :) ):

P.S.: Because it was so nice, same combination of protagonists, same music, but grabbed at a different concert: As you can see Ballhaus - while citing himself - is easily capable of employing unlimited more more possible visual interpretations - in this case the Japanese version for *their* marked and visual customs where it is all a sum of details like a mosaique: Closer, closer, closer! (just FDR, I like the first version better as it is more abstract, though I recognize and appreciate the unique visuaization of the 2nd, Ballhaus *is* a genius!). NOTE how he has added (one!) color this time to contrast with the b/w take of before, and how he even more condensed the pictures in depth, to be able to play with rear ground reflections and create a less "strict" visual impression than in the ones above...!

A full 32 minutes with the way Ballhaus painted Karajan then (more colorful, he shows him as the benevolant god of music this time) and singers and choir (after min 14):

This one might as well go to the "Snippets and memories" thread, as it is one for me: Always listened to this song (secretly, was strictly forbidden) in my dorm at the boarding school in England to go to sleep, dont know whether listening to that kind of lyrics was healthy for a (almost) 16 yrs old...? Maybe a part of the madness that people attribute to me (and that I sometimes feel) can be traced back to listening to and batteling with those thoughts and emotions when I was young? Listening to them now after what must surely be 20+ yrs for the first time again, I find I still know them by heart and can instantly sing along, so they must be deep embedded in my setup... Shrink, where are you when I need you? :)

Anyway, it sure opened my musical horizon wide, first time I ever heard - and later understood - about the art of arrangement, nothing like this before nor after... (sorry, but this incredibly complex and fascinating piece is split in varius parts, too long for youtube, it is an Opera all by itself...).

Between you and Rattler, this is one very interesting post.  The diversity is staggering.  I see music I've never heard of, and some that I didn't think anyone even knew about any more.  I was out of town for about two weeks, and it is tough to catch up on this post after all that time.

Rattler, Jethro Tull has always been a favorite, but oddly, I've not got any on CD.  I have a few of his records.  Yes, vinyl.  Luckily I still have a turntable.  Thick as a Brick was really amazing.  Thanks for reviving that for me.  One of my favorites, as well as.....Aqualung, of course.  He had such an interesting and somewhat mesmerizing way of melding classical and rock.  I don't know of anyone else who used the flute in rock-and-role like he did.

You and Jilly switched gears so quickly.  It is hard to keep up.  Rod Stewart, again such great music.  My all time favorite of his is "Infatuation."  The video is pretty slick too.

Then you have Beethoven mixed in as well.  The Ninth Symphony 2nd movement is always a classical favorite.  I always enjoyed the way Beethoven utilized the french horn.  I played that years ago, all the way into college, and can still play it fairly well.  The camera man went a long way to dramatize the music being played.  My father had me watch Leonard Bernstein whenever he was on public TV.  I confess that I'm not familiar with Karajan.  Really superior music.  I could listen to it all day.

Yes, this thread is becoming cult, I have heard now from friends (I have it featured it on some of my blogs) that they can hardly wait to see what has been added. One of my favorite Flamenco singers, Enrique Morentes (I have mentioned him before), together with one of my favorite dancers from the ´90s, Eva "La Yerbabuena", interpreting a poem of Garcia Lorca. This must have been late ´90s, as Morente is significantly older now, and Eva has gained some 20 kilos.

Folks, I am setting up here for a very unusual and special post after this one, it is (of cause) all about music, but it is also about something else (and I hope the Forum Gods will me allow to pull it through).

As an appetizer, it has to do with radio, it has to do with musical artists, it has to do with philosophy, and: Very little is in English...:(

To prep you I want to present you with a true musician (French by birth, but many won´t believe it as he sings in Portugese, Spanish, French and English), some here I am sure cannot stand him as he has a political opinion (left), but he is from my POV not only an internationally super awarded musician but also a character, a guy that - like Sting, Bono and some others - uses his mediatic influence and economic power to alert and promote aspects of life that do not find a place in regular media and from my POV to often get forgotten to be reported and, hence, are ignored by the wider public.

I will just pressent two songs by him (there is a multitude out there, they guy is hyperactive, just look in youtube), the first one is one my favorites and the third is about my next post (that´s why I post lyrics and translation so it makes more sense).

Following up on my post about Manu Chao, today I will present a series of musical snippets that do not exactly qualify as "songs" as such. They are part of something I have been listening to for the last three days since I ran into the film "LT22 Radio La Colifata", transmitted on Spanish television last Friday night.

I have done a lot of research in the area of videos (in the hope of mybe finding the whole film), but, I could only find snippets and some .mp3s, but I hopow you will bear with me if this time not all vids here are plain straightforward songs (many are, though).

Radio La Colifata is a radio station that for the last 18 years has been transmitting from the hospital "La Borda" in Buenos Aires, Argentina, every Saturday afternoon for 4 hours.

This station has about 12 million listeners all over the world, as it´s broadcasts are - in short snippets - retransmitted by many other stations, the thing that makes LT22 special is that it is exclusively run by the interns and patients of this psychiatric hospital.

"Colifa" means "crazy/looney", and the patients chose the name for their station themselves. From report of ABC Australia:

Now, many well known artists support the project which is probably forced to close down soon due to the pressures of the government and the Kirchners who do not really like to hear people freely and without restraints discussing their corruption and failures, to just name one theme that the inmates recur to often. Manu Chao, especially, has devoted a lot of money and personal involvement with the station and the patients. He visits them frequently, singing with and for them:

He prepared a short video clip about and with them, made a big concert that featured them all on stage, and paid for the film that was triggering my post. Last, his latest album "Viva La Colifata!" is out since August, to freely download from "Radio La Colifatas" website on the idea that anybody might pay what he feel it is worth, the money wil go to the hospital. The album is a series of compositions that take original transmissions and edits them into interesting and sometimes deeply disturbing songs: To me it seems the "crazies" somteimes have a way deeper insight into the world´s mysteries than the "normals"...

Here the short song that he made with the patients, he mixed his music with the statements of the patients about their daily life there and his vido team transferred them into pictures:

Maybe you younger guys/gals don´t remember, but during the Cold War there was a general feeling of imminent destruction looming behind the horizon, 7 minutes away, that never left you (at least in Germany, who was destined to burn and sacrifice itself in order to save the Free World...), a heavy but ignored weight on your back, always present, especially when you were serving (we served *to prevent* war, not to fight it, iin our books we had 16 minutes of survival)...

I recall this song summing it up just perfectly, and I recall that I even at that time realized it was summing it up perfectly. Even after S11, I do not hope any of you young guys will ever feel something like this again, it marks you forever:

Thanks for all that music, Rattler!  Just great.  The Manu Chao, seems like such an interesting group of people.  That Indian music is very relaxing isn't it?  I must admit I never really listen to that kind of music,  I think I just heard too much of it as a kid and now the interest is gone,  or maybe it never was there.  Love the lyrics in the song too.

Well, I have chosen today the two songs I want to hear at my funeral:

Koen,
  The interesting part of this post is the new stuff I pick up.  Kathy's Song by Apoptygma Berzerk is very nice.  I was not aware of the band, and now I am.  I listened to a few of their other songs, Shadow being a good one too.  There does seem to be a pretty strong influence from groups like Depeche Mode, especially evident in that song.  Sometimes Techo just hits the spot.
