Thanks for the translation

Solideo had also done one, but his PC crashed before he could publish.

Let me add that in Spanish this poem - sounding curt and harsh in the English translation maybe - transports melody, soul and "more than a feeling", it is pure art...

The dark side of soldiering: How could have anyone in his sane mind, whatever his political stance, conciously have killed this great poet, Noble Prize winner, a flag for Chile, just because of orders, in the coup? And "...doing it for my country!..." ??

We do not know the name of the soldier, but I guess he will not have slept well ever since, and he won´t in the future.

And as so often in this screwed cold war times, the CIA behind it, depriving the world of a great thinker and poet just because it suited the "US interests" better to have a "commie" less... Bedroefd

Here one more, one of my favorite love poems (as it captures exactly how I feel when I do love...), with more music, and the lyrics in Spanish and translated to English:

Te amo
Te amo de una manera inexplicable
De una forma inconfesable
De un modo contradictorio
    I love you
I love you in some inexplicable way
In an unconfessable way
In ways that are contradictory

Te amo
Con mis estados de ánimo que son muchos
Y cambian de humor continuamente
Por lo que ya sabes...
El tiempo la vida y la muerte
    I love you
With my moods - and I have many -
that constantly are changing their swing
As you so well know by now ...
Time, life and death

Te amo
Con el mundo que no entiendo
Con la gente que no comprende
Con la ambivalencia de mi alma
Con la incoherencia de mis actos
Con la fatalidad del destino
Con la conspiración del deseo
Con la ambigüedad de los hechos
    I love you
With the world that I cannot understand
With the people who do not understand
With the ambivalence of my soul
With the inconsistency of my actions
With the inevitability of fate
With the conspiracy of desire
With the ambiguity of the facts

Aun cuando te digo que not te amo, te amo
Hasta cuando te engaño no te engaño...
En el fondo llevo a cabo un plan
Para amarte mejor.
Even when telling you that I don´t love you, I love you
Even when I am cheating on you I am not cheating on you ...
Basically I am carrying out a plan
To love you better.

    I love you ...
without thinking, unconsciously,
irresponsibly, spontaneously
unintentionally, by instinct,
through impulse, irrationally.
In fact I have no logical arguments,
not even improvised
to substantiate this love I feel for you,
which emerged mysteriously from nowhere,
which not has magically solved anything,
but that miraculously, slowly, with little or nothing
has made better the worst in me.

Te amo.
Te amo con un cuerpo que no piensa,
con un corazón que no razona,
con una cabeza que no coordina.
Te amo
Incomprensiblemente.
Sin preguntarme, por qué te amo.
Sin importarme por qué te amo.
Sin cuestionarme por qué te amo.
Te amo
sencillamente porque te amo.
Yo mismo no se por qué te amo.
    I love you
I love you with a body that does not think,
With a heart that does not reason,
With a head that does not coordinate ...
I love you
Incomprehensibly
Without asking myself why I love you
Without resting importance as to why I love you
Without reasoning as to why I love you ...
I love you ...
Simply because I love you ...
I myself do not know why I love you.

pablo neruda-te amo

Yes, I agree with Rattler on that.  However, none can really stand up to the original.  Yes, yes, I am showing my age on that, but the original was so starkly sad and poignant that you could feel the pain and loneliness.  The instruments were solo as well, even enhancing how alone the characters in the lyrics really were.

Heinrich, my take also, the original has something special, with the strings and all, always had been one of my favorites once I started drugs in the late´70s, and made it clear those where genius composers... (and sorry Solideo, as much appreciated are those versions I did not know - and of which the third has made it ot my machine - , but: A purist in the end will always turn out to be a purist, more so if he happens to be German by culture... Smiley ):

Quote
Ah, look at all the lonely people
Ah, look at all the lonely people

Eleanor Rigby picks up the rice in the church where a wedding has been,
Lives in a dream...
Waits at the window, wearing the face that she keeps in a jar by the door
Who is it for?

All the lonely people
Where do they all come from ?
All the lonely people
Where do they all belong ?

Father Mckenzie writing the words of a sermon that no one will hear...
No one comes near.
Look at him working: Darning his socks in the night when there's nobody there...

Why does he care?

All the lonely people
Where do they all come from?
All the lonely people
Where do they all belong?

Eleanor Rigby died in the church and was buried along with her name
Nobody came
Father Mckenzie wiping the dirt from his hands as he walks from the grave
No one was saved

All the lonely people
Where do they all come from?
All the lonely people
Where do they all belong?

Beatles- Eleanor Rigby

Rattler (off to practice Elenor Rigby in a rocky version on the Accordeon... just joking, but it´s definitely on the to-do list for winter... Smiley )

Such sad lyrics.   I do a lot of highway driving and I like to play music while I drive.  I like it loud, very loud.  Here's one of the kind I like hear:

Nice stuff, Jilly & Koen...

Koen, especially the Black Symphony is pure art, but: Is that you on the bass???  hihi

Anyone remembers these? Called a "Sissy Band" very often, they really had some great songs between thier loads of mediocre or bad stuff:

Spandau Ballet - Gold

Spandau Ballet - Paint Me Down

Spandau Ballet - I'll Fly For You

Sorry to disagree (that´s why we call it discussion board), but Black Symphony (and I was ot aware ther was a studio version???) is their greatest work ever from my POV, I have not bught the DVD, but listened to a lot of snippets ovr the years.

Now, more forgotten stuff from the ´80s (70´s and ß´80s is where I know my turf), recall who in ´81 invented the slap bass as a central motive in songs?

For the musically challenged that ask "WTF is a "slap" bass??), here a short demo (today every serious bass player has it pat down), it is a thumb stroke on the bass that makes is sound a dry "slap" almost substituting drums, great for adding rhythm with a bass to e.g. funky or jazzy pieces:

Slap bass basics

bass slap school #1

It was invented (?) by Mark King who (even if it should turn out he didnt invent it after all with all you wise guys out there) made it *the* bass revolution in the early ´80s and everybody ran to learn it:
Mark King Slap Solo

Here the very rare original 1981 version of the first song based on slap bass that ever made #1 in the charts (NOTE how he never touches the bass with fingers, it is all "slapping", and it carries the base of the song´s rhythm, the drums are just painting it out with snare and HiHats)

Level 42 - Love Games

And here, 25 yrs later, he has made it an art, finally, *much* better version funk wise, but for some strange reason I prefer the older version: More soul: Check his hand in this one alos, in ´81 he was "playing" it, in 2006 he was "working" it...:
