Welcome to War and Tactics!    War and Tactics Forum is currently undergoing some modifications that might disable features you are used to. This is unabvoidable as we have to update the forum engine to a new structure that is incompatible with many of the features we had used so far. The good news: WaT will be more secure and stable, and most of the features we uninstalled will be a natural part of the new structure anyway. For the rest we will be looking for solutions. Very funny, Matt.   Grijns

It's hard to know what is real and what is not, in this great electronic world that we live in.

But last time I checked,  I had two arms and two legs, a face and somewhere buried deep inside,  a heart.  Tong

surely you know there is at least one...

Did you check out the Giants ("Gigantes" in Spanish) before commiting? Those guys with four arms, ready to hit you anytime?

"Excuse me Sir, but to what Giants are you refering to?" ... "Those there, on the hill!" -snip-  "But, Sir, they are not Giants, those are wind mills ("Molinos" in Spanish)!"

"Oh, Sancho, do not tell me they are wind mills, shut up! If you are afraid, feel free to stay behind, it is not your cause, but I will not evade battle with them... "

..."but, Sir, they are just wind mills!"

.... "They are... Giants!... and I will take them on for you, Dulcinea!"  hatsoff

Really, are we not, 500 yrs later, living the same passions, convictions and errors? What makes a hero a hero? Did Cervantes paint something akin to every man on the planet?

For me, as Rattler, it is easy to see why Cervantes is the (German) Goethe and the (Brit) Shakespeare of Spain and why Don Quijote is the national hero, ridiculous or not...  champ  A true "Knight"!  hatsoff salute (he even probalby would have won if it had not been for the "Great Enchanter"!) from a timeless novel...!

El Quijote - Molinos de Viento (Wind Mills)

For our English speaking friends, more or less the same scene, from a different interpretation (wherein Don Quixote does battle with a giant four armed monster, but is deprived of glory by the Great Enchanter), a bit - much - more American than the one before (DC here is painted more ridiculous than he actually was, but maybe the director did not understand the profoundness of Cervantes´vision):

The GIANT Windmill

To bring it back to music, here the musical interpretation of the same moment, performed by an US (Alabama) orchestra (Symphony No. 3 - Don Quixote - 3rd Movement - The Windmills, by Robert W. Smith):

Don Quixote - The Windmills

Okies, for something (halfway completely) different: All this wind mill stuff made me remember one of the real beautiful songs that form part of my credo and that somehow had lodged istelf in a cavern of my mind where the sun has never shone recently: "Windmills of Your Mind", here perfomed by Sting (but it is a song of my childhood, by Michel Legrand, many interpreters out there if you search):

Quote
Round, like a circle in a spiral
Like a wheel within a wheel.
Never ending or beginning,
On an ever spinning wheel
Like a snowball down a mountain
Or a carnaval balloon
Like a carousell that's turning
Running rings around the moon

Like a clock whose hands are sweeping
Past the minutes on it's face
And the world is like an apple
Whirling silently in space
Like the circles that you find
In the windmills of your mind

Like a tunnel that you follow
To a tunnel of it's own
Down a hollow to a cavern
Where the sun has never shone
Like a door that keeps revolving
In a half forgotten dream
Or the ripples from a pebble
Someone tosses in a stream.

Like a clock whose hands are sweeping
Past the minutes on it's face
And the world is like an apple
Whirling silently in space
Like the circles that you find
In the windmills of your mind

Keys that jingle in your pocket
Words that jangle your head
Why did summer go so quickly
Was it something that I said
Lovers walking allong the shore,
Leave their footprints in the sand
Was the sound of distant drumming
Just the fingers of your hand

Pictures hanging in a hallway
And a fragment of this song
Half remembered names and faces
But to whom do they belong
When you knew that it was over
Were you suddenly aware
That the autumn leaves were turning
To the color of her hair

Like a circle in a spiral
Like a wheel within a wheel
Never ending or beginning,
On an ever spinning wheel
As the images unwind
Like the circle that you find
In the windmills of your mind

Pictures hanging in a hallway
And the fragment of this song
Half remembered names and faces
But to whom do they belong
When you knew that it was over
Were you suddenly aware
That the autumn leaves were turning
To the color of her hair

Like a circle in a spiral
Like a wheel within a wheel
Never ending or beginning,
On an ever spinning wheel
As the images unwind
Like the circles that you find
In the windmills of your mind

Sting - Windmills Of Your Mind

Enjoy,

A kind of a shame for a mil site, we somehow missed the one and only song *every* soldier knows and cherishs, no matter which side he fights on or which nation he comes from (and all civivies here are kindly invited to listen to all of them, it is a song you will never forget once having listened to it, and if you are a street musician it will grant you income in whatever country Smiley )...

Here a quick rundown on different national takes, the differences are due to culture, and, so, paint a picture of each culture in just ... a song  Speaking always about the same, the heartache having to part and the hope of meeting again...:

The German original, Marlene Dietrich:

Lili Marlene

... and her US American version:

Marlene Dietrich Lili Marlene USO Camp

The (two distinct) English Versions, I have heard soldiers were fighting over the "right" take:

"Lili Marleen" (Lale Andersen, 1942 [English Version])

Lile marlene british version vera lynn

The (Fascist) Blue Division Spanish version

DIVISION AZUL - LILI MARLEN EN ESPAÑOL (Embedding disabled, limit reached)

Russian:

Lili Marleen in Russian recorded 1943 (Embedding disabled, limit reached)

Swedish

Lili Marleen (Swedish) (Embedding disabled, limit reached)

Italian:

Lilli Marleen ( Italienisch Version ) (Embedding disabled, limit reached)

French:

Lili Marleen in French recorded 1941 (Embedding disabled, limit reached)

and even the Japanese had their take:

Kinomi Nana sings Lili Marlene (Embedding disabled, limit reached)

Many more nationalized versions out there, the soldiers´ family "family" song...!

This one from my heart to all the (ex and current) warriors out there!

Long forgotten, but as suddenly I am about to find myself falling again into mainly focussing on one special lady out there (but then again, no!)...  Anyway, this one is for her:

What a truly beautiful song,  Rattler.  She's very lucky, the lady who inspired you to post this one.

I really like the following song by Elton John,  about Norma Jean.  Such a special childlike woman.

Marilyn Monroe

I am always torn, sometimes I see her like you, sometimes as a kind of high class whore, never can decide what I really believe in the respect, simply cannot make up my mind, as even simple things as beer do not always meet my expectations (this bit said, nobody ever has to worry about me, I can live with the outcome of both the beer and the women, just it is that I am a bit particular, sometimes, and to be Tom Waits ´76 really would not break my schemes Smiley ):

Tom Waits - Warm Beer Cold Women

And your previous posts, Rattler,  just amazing...  so many versions of the same song.

Well, I am claiming it is it the "universal" soldiers song, so it has to be present in all languages, no?

Does it not have to be "Navidul"?  Brede lach

ANUNCIO NAVIDUL CANIBALES VERSION LARGA

(For the Spanish challenged - someone say again I am not diplomatic?  whistle):

This is a 2nd part of an ad of "Navidul Hams", where two Spanish explorers (first ad showed them in the supermarket buying ham, where one explorer wants to buy Navidul, and the other a much cheaper one: "Ah, don´t tell me we will meet cannibals that will know the difference, this one is cheaper!")get caught by cannibals, have to go the ropes (I like the ladies: "He will not make a good soup, needs to do some Pilates first... ") and out of instinct try to convince them to rethink their take on life: "Brothers cannibals, whay not eat our Ham instead of us?".

The cannibals dont trust the offer, so the "oracle" is called, turns out it is a monkey (Explorer right: "But, that is a monkey!?" Explorer left: "Shhht... Don´t tell him!") who tests the ham and then finds it has too much salt, "more than the river Katuranga", it simply not is Navidul: "Oh, how I remember those snacks in the bar of Paco in Madrid! Oh, that delicious ham!"...

Verdict: "Off to the pot with them"!...

Lesson Learned: "With your Ham, you don´t want to take any risks!"

Enjoy,

Rattler

A song that I liked when I was young, now I found another, nice version.

The original:

Music was my first Love John Miles

And here, a nice cover , made by "Il Divo", a casted "Four Tenors" group (Carlos Marín (baríton, Spain), David Miller (tenor, US), Sebastien Izambard (voz popular, France) y Urs Buhler (tenor, Switzerland), with Italian lyrics:

Quote
Musica è il mio amore
Il primo e l'ultimo
Musica è il futuro
Ed il passato in me.

Restare senza note
Impossibile perchè
In queste stanze vuote
La musica mia c'è

Musica è l'amore
Primo e anche l'unico
Regalo mio più grande
La musica per te

Musica è il mio amore
Il primo e l'ultimo
Musica è il futuro
Ed il passato in me
Ed il passato in me
Il passato in me

E nel mio spirito
Un canto libero
La musica è la vita
Che c'è in me
E non ha limite

Musica è il mio amore
Il primo e l'ultimo
Musica è il futuro
Ed il passato in me

Restare senza note
Impossibile perchè
In queste stanze vuote
La musica mia c'è

Il Divo - Musica
