Welcome to War and Tactics!    War and Tactics Forum is currently undergoing some modifications that might disable features you are used to. This is unabvoidable as we have to update the forum engine to a new structure that is incompatible with many of the features we had used so far. The good news: WaT will be more secure and stable, and most of the features we uninstalled will be a natural part of the new structure anyway. For the rest we will be looking for solutions. Not many, there are a total of maybe 5 pics Ki 1 and Ki 2 on the net. There are, though, pics of war sorties (against the Chinese 1937-38) in several books whos titles I not have present off my head.

Here the pics I have seen on the net (all more or less Chinese war):

thanks for everyone's help.  (Koen, I cannot modify the OP to change the title to the correct info so far.)  I'm hoping to hear from my London friend who translates for me on Monday; will let you know, as he may be able to tell us if this is indeed the one in Japanese service.

Thanks, Koen.

My Japanese friend in London says the caption translates to: "Ai koku dai ichi Go Ki no zen tan", or "Patriot No. 1 "Go Ki" of front side." [or maybe "patriot No.1, nose of Go Ki"]   Go Ki he says is probably the make, which could be the 'Ki1' mentioned above.

"go" = "5" in Japanese, IIRC. "ichi" would be the "1"...

I learned "ichi, ni, san, si/yon, go, roku, si-chi/nana, ha-chi, kyu, jyu", sorry I did not learn much more japanese (a little more, but it wont help in this context).
