Welcome to War and Tactics!    War and Tactics Forum is currently undergoing some modifications that might disable features you are used to. This is unabvoidable as we have to update the forum engine to a new structure that is incompatible with many of the features we had used so far. The good news: WaT will be more secure and stable, and most of the features we uninstalled will be a natural part of the new structure anyway. For the rest we will be looking for solutions. All western militaries have staffs for the daily functioning of the army.
The origine of these stafs dated back to the Napoleon era.
These stafs are divided in 9 sections.
These sections can be found in all kinds of units from batallion to corps or army level.
Following is a brief explanation of those sections like you can find them in the Dutch army.
Usually the sections are designated with an S following a number, however in some cases an E is used as well.
This means that particular section is an additional element, therefore the E.

S1: Personell: responsible for recruting, selection and administrative tasks.
S2: Intelligence/Security: responsible for intelligence/planning like intell about enemy, terrain and other aspects important to a fieldcommander.
S3: Operations: responsible for planning operations, on batallion and brigadelevel also responsible for training and education. (often integrated with S2)
S4: Logistics: responsible for procurement, (re)supply and maintenance and repairs ( divisional and corps level)
S5: Planning: responsible for long term planning and operations (divisional and corps level)
S6: CIS/C3 : responsible for communications, communicationsystems and ICT
S7: Training and education: responsible for training of troops, education and writing, testing of procedures. (divisional and corps level)
S8: Finance: reponsible for financialplanning.
S9: CIMIC : civillians with specialisation temporary drafted in the service (reserve army) like medics, doctors, engineers. responsible for civilian programmes during peacekeeping operations, and for coordination with civilian authorities and NGO's.
