The Manu Chao, seems like such an interesting group of people.

Erm, "Manu Chao" is the name of the guy, the group is "Radio Bemba"...

RE: The lyrics in the Indian song from Nirvana Lounge, care to translate the non-french part?

Thanks for the dedication, and the turn on Rattler. In turn I give you my favorite from the Dead...Yes, I am a Deadhead! Coming of age in the SF Bay Area, during the 60's & 70's it was inevitable.

Grateful Dead - Ripple

If my words did glow with the gold of sunshine
And my tunes were played on the harp unstrung,
Would you hear my voice come thru the music,
Would you hold it near as it were your own?

Its a hand-me-down, the thoughts are broken,
Perhaps theyre better left unsung.
I dont know, dont really care
Let there be songs to fill the air.

Ripple in still water,
When there is no pebble tossed,
Nor wind to blow.

Reach out your hand if your cup be empty,
If your cup is full may it be again,
Let it be known there is a fountain,
That was not made by the hands of men.

There is a road, no simple highway,
Between the dawn and the dark of night,
And if you go no one may follow,
That path is for your steps alone.

Ripple in still water,
When there is no pebble tossed,
Nor wind to blow.

But if you fall you fall alone,
If you should stand then whos to guide you?
If I knew the way I would take you home.

La dee da da da, la da da da da, da da da, da da, da da da da da
La da da da, la da da, da da, la da da da, la da, da da

Thx FacMan, I also like the Deads, and the lyrics are touching!

Now, one for Henk, we have not mentioned many Dutch great Bands, my personal favorite lately has been "De Phazz" with their cool relaxed mix of Street Jazz and Dance Floor Chill:

de phazz - Cut The Jazz

Their best known probably is "No Jive":

De Phazz: No jive (External Embedding Disabled)

And another one, trance piece:

Quote
birth is a label of end. end is a label of beginning.
beginning is a label of hope. hope is a label of future.
future is a label of past. past is a label of history.
history is not a label of recall but of words.
words are a label of religion.

religion is a label of god. god is a label of power.
power is a label of submission. submission is a label of sacrifice.
sacrifice is a label of an altar. an altar is a label of three.
three is a label of numbers. numbers are a label of eternity.

eternity is a label of limits of imagination.
time is a label of appearance. appearance is a label of light.
shine is a label of knowledge. shine is a label of information.
a line is a label of an extended bow. an arrow is a label of a bow.

the bow is the power of an arrow. a label is a label of a label.
life is a label of death. imagination is a label what a blind person believes in.
a blind person is label of a painter. a painting is a label of an optical event.
an event is a label of a moment. a moment is a label of any time.

time is a label of beauty. beauty is a label of lies.
lies are a label of myth. myth is a label of survival.
survival is a label of hunger. hunger is a label of love.
love is label silence. silence is a label of listening.

A FLOWER IS A LABEL OF A ROSE. A ROSE IS A LABEL OF CULTURAL NATURE.
A ROSE IS AN ANTIROMANTICAL MIMESIS.
ROSES COME FROM WHERE WE WILL NEVER GO TO.

clouds are a label of invisible stars. stars are a label of sun.
sky is a label of heaven. a mirror is a label of a silent person.
a silent person is a contradiction.

Another one I had forgotten for some time: Joe Jackson, with his almost Gershwin like arrangements somewhere between New Wave, Rock and Jazz and his unique voice:

Quote
Take your mind back - I dont know when
Sometime when it always seemed
To be just us and them
Girls that wore pink
And boys that wore blue
Boys that always grew up better men
Than me and you

Whats a man now - whats a man mean
Is he rough or is he rugged
Is he cultural and clean
Now its all change - its got to change more
cause we think its getting better
But nobodys really sure

And so it goes - go round again
But now and then we wonder who the real men are

See the nice boys - dancing in pairs
Golden earring golden tan
Blow-wave in the hair
Sure theyre all straight - straight as a line
All the gays are macho
Cant you see their leather shine

You dont want to sound dumb - dont want to offend
So dont call me a faggot
Not unless you are a friend
Then if youre tall and handsome and strong
You can wear the uniform and I could play along

And so it goes - go round again
But now and then we wonder who the real men are

Time to get scared - time to change plan
Dont know how to treat a lady
Dont know how to be a man
Time to admit - what you call defeat
cause theres women running past you now
And you just drag your feet

Man makes a gun - man goes to war
Man can kill and man can drink
And man can take a whore
Kill all the blacks - kill all the reds
And if theres war between the sexes
Then therell be no people left

And so it goes - go round again
But now and then we wonder who the real men are

Joe Jackson - Real Men

Two of my favorites, "Stepping Out" and the real and only "Slow Song" (after the third you will sing along Smiley ):

Joe Jackson - Steppin' Out

A Slow Song - Joe Jackson

And there is then of cause his master album for some, "Jumping Jive", a ´20s song compiliation which deserves a seperate post, just a link here as appetizer (you have to copy and paste it to your address line as I wrapped it up so it wouldn´t get parsed - or you wait a day or two for the respective post Smiley ):

At times I have simple tastes,  and I'm an incurable romantic too.  So here's the song for today.

Shaina Twain:

And because I have a strange sense of humor too:

Nice, romantic songs are great when you are in love.. Smiley (and the "No Quitter" is a really nice vid Smiley ).

The one I really liked of her was the "That don´t impress me much" tune, but then, the Austen Girls version also exists, and external embedded is not disabled Smiley :

Austen Girls - That don't impress me much

I liked the way the guy made the video:

Quote
I'm one of those person who loves to sing in the shower, last weekend I was enjoying a nice bath when this song pop up in my head and images of these movies wouldn't leave me alone, I just knew that I had to make a fanvid with it.

Since the song is pretty upbeat I wanted to make a fun video, I had so much fun while I was doing it, I hope you like it!

No Dashing Heroes this time! But some of these guys sure are charming in their own way.

The Austen Girls and their suitors are:
- Lizzy and Mr. Collins (je je could you picture him as a rocket scientist ^.^)
- Emma and Frank Churchill (that devious smile...)
- Catherine Morland and John Thorpe
- Anne Elliot and Mr. Elliot
- Emma and Frank Churchill (again)
- Marianne and Willoughby (I had to play with the clips because unlike the others, she was in love with him)
- Fanny and Henry Crawford

Enjoy!

U2 is coming to Belgium in September 2010.

In the middle of buying tickets...I ordered by SMS...now waiting for confirmation...  hdbng

U2 360 TOUR OPENING NIGHT BARCELONA

and I got FREE tickets for 'Sinners Day' I reported on earlier  champ

Quote
The Psychedelic Furs cancelled their European tour and will be replaced by the British punk funk band the GANG OF FOUR.
Studio Brussel reunites the Kings of New Wave and Punk on the brand new Sinner’s Day Festival.

On All Saints’ Day we should revive the memories of our beloved, passed-away relatives… But this year, Sunday 1 November 2009, a bunch of alive and kicking myths and legends from the 80’s will be reunited in the Hasselt Ethias Arena.
What do you think about the cult band Bollock Brothers, or Anne Clark, the New Wave poet, Gary - Are Friends Electric- Numan, Lydia Lunch & The Big Sexy Noise, The English Synth-pop group The Human League, You do know ‘Don’tyou want me’, ‘Human’ and ‘Being Boiled’ and, of course, our own icons: The Neon Judgement and the most revolutionary Belgian band ever: Front 242!
We also welcome Peter Hook from New Order and Joy Division and Andy Rourke from the Smiths as DJ's. ... we know you will be impressed.
This scene is much more than music, so don’t forget to visit the extended Camden Market on Sinner’s Day. The market was name after the legendary London quarter where all new wavers bought their t-shirts and music.

Oh, before we forget: there is this exclusive Sinner’s Day Photo Exhibition with unique images of famous 80’s artists. www.newwavephotos.com.
Just be there!

Tubeway Army!  iconclap

Well, I have chosen today the two songs I want to hear at my funeral:

First, Pacelbels Canon in D, and (as I think it is always interpreted too slow today, it is a piece that should animate IMHO) in a fast - Rattler Life - version like this ones:

Pachelbel - Canon Rock

There exists also a nice pure brass version by "Canadian Brass", fast enough to be animating, formal enough to not disturb a funeral:

Canadian Brass "Pachelbel Canon"

And then, of cause, on the way out or when (which here in Spain would probably be my fate) they go distribute my ash in the sea (they don´t allow sea burials of the entire body anmore - for "hygienic" reasons... Anybody has an idea how many dead fish and bodies float in the med at any given moment?! - ), the Adagio in G Minor by Tomás Albinoni (which actually was not by him, but written by Remo Giazotto over fragments by Abinoni, and published 1958), full 9 minutes to mourn and cry for my non existing agnostic soul Smiley

Adagio in G Minor (Albinoni)

Enjoy (or not),

Much appreciated!

I sincerely hope, though, to come to this point rather later than earlier (OTOH, Andrés Montes that the last song was dedicated to had my age exactly, life is fragile!)...

As autumn has hit here: I didn´t like this summer, but now that it´s gone, I miss it... gif time!

Aren´t we crazy sometimes?

Anyway, here one for the summer and the times, for me the best ever for this song since Gerswhin wrote it, and there are literally thousands out there, mayn equally great, but none topping it!

Janis Joplin with Big Brother & The Holding Company. Guitar: James Gurley / Sam Andrew / Peter Albin; Drums: David Getz.

Summertime - Janis Joplin

Koen,
The interesting part of this post is the new stuff I pick up.  Kathy's Song by Apoptygma Berzerk is very nice.  I was not aware of the band, and now I am.  I listened to a few of their other songs, Shadow being a good one too.  There does seem to be a pretty strong influence from groups like Depeche Mode, especially evident in that song.  Sometimes Techo just hits the spot.
