Welcome to War and Tactics!    War and Tactics Forum is currently undergoing some modifications that might disable features you are used to. This is unabvoidable as we have to update the forum engine to a new structure that is incompatible with many of the features we had used so far. The good news: WaT will be more secure and stable, and most of the features we uninstalled will be a natural part of the new structure anyway. For the rest we will be looking for solutions. It *is* very 70s (which isnt bad by itself - my music knowledge ends about ´84  Huh?), it is a classic, granted, and it is even great to relive memeories by listening once every 5 yrs to it (from my POV). It is too Pop for my taste, lyrics are for the poetically inhibitated IMHO...  Grijns

But guys, you really got me going, I have searched for stuff in my vast (vinyl) collection that I haven´t been listening to for years... I just *love* Music Threads! Grijns

My ´70s stuff (as I am all for the lyrics all the time, and for a good solo, or a good arrangement, or all of those; additionally they had to be worth to save money to see them live in concert...) has such stuff as (they all fit the mentioned categories):

1. Uriah Heep, Salisbury (due to the 10 min limit this has been split in two parts on youtube, A CRIME !!!  Geschokt), a badass solo in part 2! Lyrics: http://mog.com/music/Uriah_Heep/Salisbury/Salisbury/lyrics

Quote
Somewhere in your eye, that very special glow.
Something drawing me, to where, I do not know.
I never really thought that I would lose myself.
But now I'm going faster than anybody else. ...

The Album cover displayed is the US version, mine looks like attachment 1 (EDIT TechAdmin 23JUL2011: NOT true anymore):

Uriah Heep - Salisbury (Part 1)

part 2:
Uriah Heep - Salisbury (part 2)

2. E.L.P, Knife Edge, live ´72; Ah! What a mix in concert (getting better later in the century still)! The maniac E ripping ever so creative stuff on his Moog, the immersive voice of L and the ever so precise P using his drums as a full fledged melody instrument: I don´t exactly recall what drugs I was on in ´72, but the Lyrics had me mesmerized and still have meaning today http://www.lyricstime.com/emerson-lake-palmer-knife-edge-lyrics.html:

Quote
...
When the flames have their season
Will you hold to your reason
Loaded down with your talents
Can you still keep your balance
Can you live on a knife-edge?

Emerson, Lake & Palmer-Knife Edge - Emerson, Lake & Palmer

3. David Bowie, Five Years, ´72. Try this one in a Karaoke once!  Grijns Lyrics: http://www.sing365.com/music/lyric.nsf/Five-Years-lyrics-David-Bowie/4C097F89A78166F5482568A2001051C0

Quote
...
My brain hurt like a warehouse, it had no room to spare
I had to cram so many things to store everything in there
And all the fat-skinny people, and all the tall-short people
And all the nobody people, and all the somebody people
I never thought I'd need so many people

4. Yes, I Have Seen All Good People (both parts, of cause), ´71 (?). Incredible but true: I have tried now for 1.5(!) hours to find a vid on the net that plays the original version of this song, literally impossible... All out there is live and interesting, but lacks the fine arrangements and the sound quality of the studio version and is... crap.  Kwaad

In the end (and its the only one) I found a link to a audio only version of that real ´70 beauty (again for me the lyrics held meaning then, and do today still): http://www.metrolyrics.com/ive-seen-all-good-people-lyrics-yes.html

Quote
...
Take a straight and stronger course to the corner of your life.
Make the white queen run so fast
She hasnt got time to make you a wife.

EDIT NOV 7, 2011: Not true anymore, here the vid:

I've Seen all Good People(studio) (Embedding disabled, limit reached)

5. FZ, Stinkfoot live, ´74 - and at that time I was completely *In Love* with Ruth Underwood!  Grijns (Album Version Lyrics here: http://www.sing365.com/music/lyric.nsf/Stinkfoot-lyrics-Frank-Zappa/ADEBCC93DA09FD734825697200280A71):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kf8TM4CIk5g#normal (Embedding disabled, limit reached)

(he even did it for me in the ´80s still with stuff like this one, some of the best concerts I ever have to - Barcelona: FZ, Illinois Enema Bandit, live ´88, featuring a solo to remember  :'() Lyrics for the studio version here, skip the announcement for the live version: http://www.metrolyrics.com/the-illinois-enema-bandit-lyrics-frank-zappa.html

You want a groovier arrangement (to make clear what I mean with arrangements)?  Here you go! Ike Willis singing instead of George Duke, and the text closer to the studio version:

Ok, enough for today,

Rattler

P.S.: And what happened to Ruth Underwood? Well, after not having played for 30 years and being 62 she has not lost much of either skills nor looks...: FZ´s "St. Alphonzo's Pancake Breakfast" Xylophone Track:

Guys, I have a 64-bit processor and as far as I can find out I can't run Adobe Flash to see all of your fine links [send a PM is you have a way of working around this, please!]

that said, I don't see any mention of Can,Television, Devo, Zepplin nor Eno in the discussion of '70s music. this distresses me  Knipoog

Koen, when I was in Antwerp in '94, a group named Deus had just come out with an album I liked; whatever happened to them?

it's dEus....LINK...they became of one the finest, most talented groups in Belgium...

Lots of Belgian groups have problems with being located in such a small country, it's very difficult to go international...

You guys should check out 'dEus', 'Ozark Henry', 'Axelle Red', 'Novastar' etc...quality!

If you are into that kind of music then probably you will love the European counterpart (´80s):

Andreas Vollenweider (go youtube to find more parts of this song, of this great harp artist and to see him perform, excellent solo stuff also), "Whale rider":

A big favourite I have is a German singer, Herbert Gronemeier.
He also plays in Das Boot as the reporter on board the U-boat.

EDIT TechAdmin 23JUN2011: As I dont know hwat song Stoffel liked but wanted to give a video face to this post, here this one:

thanks for the spelling correction [dEus], Koen, and thanks for the memories.  I was working in a hostel/hotel in Antwerp when the 'Suds & Soda' album came out; the guy I worked with had entered a radio station contest and played 'Killing in the Name of' by Rage Against the Machine with an accordian and saxophone; he and his friend won and appeared on the radio.  I think they met and went out with dEus.

also, thanks to Rattler(?) I've solved the Flash problem [load IE from the icon at the bottom of the page and it uses 32-bit mode which Adobe Flash can handle] and now see all of your nice videos.  Thanks so much for your help!  I've just watched Einsteurzende Neubaten live at the Palast der Republik movie to celebrate.  their music isn't for everyone [banging empty olive oil tins on pieces of metal] but it's worth a chance, if you're open to industrial music.
