Mylady, if we are supposed to go down that long country lane, here my proposals:

Blues Brothers - Rawhide

Blues Brothers - Ghost Riders in the Sky

My two favorite country (or Western?) versions... Smiley

As I will be leaving the forum for a while, here some (really bad!) music that stems from my childhood: Ivan Rebroff (himself as singer not at all bad: 4.5 octaves of voice spectrum !!), but, he, as German (his true name revealed: Hans-Rolf Rippert), pretended to be Russian, dressed and behaved like the spit-image, and 99% of Germans believe(d) he was! - that is where my (re)search came from: LC, a Finnish band pretending to be Russians pretending to be Americans - listen to (if you can bear it) to ome tunes of my youth:

Let us start with one where you don´t see it so openly (he speaks English, the Song is a both Russian AND German WWII song (Firmly stands a soldier at the Volga beach), hard to understand the lyrics as he sings it with "fake" Russian accent), sorry, the vid is slightly out of sync:

Ivan Rebroff - Es steht ein Soldat am Wolgastrand (There stands firm a soldier at the Volga beach)

Here, at 78 yrs (!), a month befor his death, in a Christian classic, displaying still all of his volatitlity, a great voice indeed!:

IVAN REBROFF "Ave Maria"

And, to make the connection with LC, here in a mix from shots from 1969, the year his career started to lift off (the young Serge Gainsbourg copy is actually Ivan Rebroff, before starting as "Russian"!), mixed with 2008, a month beofre his death in September, with "Kalinka":

Ivan Rebroff in Memoriam -- Kalinka Malinka

Probably the first "fake" artist ever! (he sure had me convinced, I only now in my research found out he was actually a German, 40 yrs later! Such go the illusions.... Bedroefd )

big fan of Dire Straits and Mark Knopfler:

Quote
Why Aye Man
We had no way of staying afloat
We had to leave on the ferry boat
Economic refugees
On the run to Germany
We had the back of Maggie's hand
Times were tough in Geordieland
We got wor tools and working gear
And humped it all from Newcastle to here

Why aye man, why aye, why aye man
Why aye man, why aye, why aye man

We're the nomad tribes, travelling boys
In the dust and dirt and the racket and the noise
Drills and hammers, diggers and picks
Mixing concrete, laying bricks
There's English, Irish, Scots, the lot
United Nation's what we've got
Brickies, chippies, every trade
German building, british-made

Why aye man, why aye, why aye man
Why aye man, why aye, why aye man

Nae more work on Maggie's farm
Hadaway down the autobahn
Mine's a portacabin bed
Or a bunk in a nissen hut instead

There's plenty deutschmarks here to earn
And German tarts are wunderschön
German beer is chemical-free
Germany's alreet with me
Sometimes I miss my river Tyne
But you're my pretty fraulein
Tonight we'll drink the old town dry
Keep wor spirit levels high

Why aye man, why aye, why aye man
Why aye man, why aye, why aye man

So Far Away (live)
Here I am again in this mean old town
And you're so far away from me
And where are you when the sun goes down
You're so far away from me

So far away from me
So far I just can't see
So far away from me
You're so far away from me

I'm tired of being in love and being all alone
When you're so far away from me
I'm tired of making out on the telephone
And you're so far away from me

So far away from me
So far I just can't see
So far away from me
You're so far away from me

I get so tired when I have to explain
When you're so far away from me
See you been in the sun and I've been in the rain
And you're so far away from me

So far away from me
So far I just can't see
So far away from me
You're so far away from me

Speedway At Nazareth (live)
After two thousand came two thousand and one
To be the new champions, we were there for to run
From springtime in Arizona, 'til the fall in Monterey
And the raceways were the battlefields and we fought 'em all the way

Was at Phoenix in the morning, I had a wake-up call
She went around without a warning put me in the wall
I drove Long Beach, California with three cracked vertebrae
And we went on to Indianapolis, Indiana in May

Well the Brickyard's there to crucify anyone who will not learn
I climbed a mountain to qualify I went flat throught the turns
But I was down in the might-have-beens and an old pal good as died
And I sat down in Gasoline Alley and I cried

Well we were in at the kill again on the Milwaukee Mile
And in June up in Michigan we were robbed at Belle Isle
Then it was on to Portland Oregon for the G.I. Joe
And I'd blown off almost everyone when I my motor let go

New England, Ontario we died in the dirt
Those walls from mid-Ohio to Toronto they hurt
So we came to Road America where we burned up at the lake
But at the speedway at Nazareth I made no mistake

Gordieland was long time ago, Maggie also, and I remember having seen the tribes according to his lyrics (as now from Polonia and Ukrainia), still, the song (as almost everything by Knopfler) was great.

There is one difference to genious, though, you think the song has merit today or in 20 yrs? I am not sure about that.

Here my favorite Knopfler tunes (ay, that *singing* guitar!  champ), one from each of his composer/performer phases, guess which I like most?:

On forum topic:

Brothers in Arms - Dire Straits

Then, the "Going Home" theme, in its film version as played in "Local Hero" (the correct, if not the best, IMHO):

Mark Knopfler - Going Home Local Hero Theme (Night in London

And then, with his country flirt, having formed the "Notting Hillybillies" to get off the "Dire Straits " stress (and as I cnoot decidw which of this phase I like better, the foruth in this post just as linky):

Notting Hillbillies Your Own Sweet Way

Notting Hillbillies y Mark Knopfler

Rattler (off a few more hours, job looks interesting: http://todos-contra-matias.net/newstest/)

Enjoy and have fun!

Well, I got it today (for a month, on a gentlemans agreement, with a payment just to cover my rent, but that is fine, there just might be perspective). I will direct you to the site once the English part is up, today the German part has had it´s inauguration and I am in, for now.

Feels great to work as a (kind of) journalist again, and as I am a redactor in personal union for the moment, it is challenging and interesting.

Pat Metheney, anybody remembers him (one of my ´80s favorite musicians)? Fantastic guitar player, Mystic, Jazzer, Rocker, Visionaire and Music Philosopher?

Pat Metheny - Above The Treetops

For Saltamontes, should you ever read this...

Pat Metheny & Charlie Haden - Our Spanish Love Song

Well, he has done it again (which shows that we old farts can be as crazy as young ones, but with backup by money or friends Smiley )! A step into a future nobody knows what it will bring...:

He invented the "Orchestrion", a computer controlled bunch of instruments (so far nothing new), that is triggered by him playing guitar and the tunes he is playing both being interpreted and then distributed according to some sophisticated (presumably) algorithms to the various instruments...

Quote
Orchestrion brings a musical idea from the late 19th and early 20th centuries—a large mechanical multi-instrument device that utilizes actual orchestral instruments of various types, called an “Orchestrion”—to the technologies of today. Metheny’s concept includes a large ensemble of acoustic instruments—including several pianos, drum kit, marimbas, “guitar-bots,” dozens of percussion instruments and even cabinets of carefully tuned bottles. Through Metheny’s guitar and compositional mind, five new original pieces showcase the instruments as they are struck, plucked, and otherwise played via the technology of solenoid switches and pneumatics. Metheny worked for months with a brilliant team of scientists and engineers to develop and assemble the “New Orchestrion” for this project.

“As the instruments started to trickle in from the various inventors,” Metheny says, “the experience of writing for them and figuring out what might be possible with them provided a self-imposed challenge that proved to be difficult and time-consuming, but absolutely exhilarating. I am excited to share this project. If nothing else, this has turned out to be something unique. And in the process of developing all this music and these instruments and discovering what they can do and what they are good at, I learned so much. It feels like progress and has gotten some notes out of me that I didn’t know were there. But the surprise was just how far I was able to go with it all. Within this new environment, I found something in there that took me to some new places.”

Here a preview (CD will be starting to market JAN 26), what you hear is all himself only, playing guitar, plain digital music, but produced analogue, and by one artist only...

A time for a  new Jazz era, or a deadend street? Future will tell... Intriguing anyway:

Pat Metheny Orchestrion (preview of two tracks)

Ok, as Sky so much liked Rocío Jurado, here the Malaga answer to her, ony 32 "añitos", but a great, promising voice (could not find any of the latest - and much better musically - stuff on youtube, so here some songs from the recent past, you will get the idea), Diana Navarro, the closest to Rocío any other Spanish singer will get in the foreseeable future:

Tengo miedo (Diana Navarro)

Add, a "copla", from a copla contest night (and to me happens the same as to the three dancers at the side, I am shading a tear), no soy muy amante de la copla, ... pero esta chica cuando canta se para el tiempo (I am not much a "copla" fan, but when this chick sings... time stands still for a sec)... Well, suffices to say, she won the contest.

La noche de la copla. DIANA NAVARRO. Maravillosa.

and, the best that I could find and the closest to her new stuff, one more in Tango style, with Mex voice:

Diana Navarro en; "Alma de España" 30/05/08

Sky, let me know what you think, plz.

This for a lady that I had never been trying to make mine, but whom I considered a friend, and seriously so. I have lost her today, just over one phone call: Again, seriously... (the  lyrics do not apply 100%, make it 80, too much on the "need you"  lane for my case and liking at the end, no crying here neither: It´s just a song, but there is one sentence repetitively coming up in the general take that says/asks all that has me sad in the context).

Go on, guapa! May the force be with you, I wont!

Rattler

Quote
Mary wants to be a superwoman
But is that really in her head
But I just want to live each day to love her
for what she is

Mary wants to be another movie star
But is that really in her mind
And all the things she wants to be
She needs to leave behind

But, very well, I believe I know you-very well
Wish that you knew me too-very well
And I think I can deal with everything going through your head

Very well, and I think I can face-very well
Wish that you knew me too..., very well
And I think I can cope with everything going through your head

Mary wants to be a superwoman
And try to boss the bull around
But does she really think that she will get by with a dream

My woman want to be a superwoman
And I just had to say good-bye
Because I can't spend all my hours startn´ to cry

But, very well, I believe I know you
Very well, I wish that you knew me too
Very well, and I think I can deal with everything going through your head

Very well, I think that I know you too
Very well, I wish you knew me like I know you
Very well, but I think I can deal with everything going through your head

Very well, dum dum da, dum dum da
Very well, wish you knew me too
Very well, And I wish I could think of everything going through your head

Very well, dum dum da, dum da, dum da
dum dum da, dum da, very well
And I think I can deal with everything going through your head

When the summer came you were not around...
Now the summer's gone and love cannot be found...?
Where were you when I needed you - last winter, my love?

When the winter came you went further south
Parting from love's nest, leaving me in doubt,
Where are you when I need you, like right now?

Our love is at an end
But you say now you have changed
But tomorrow will reflect love's past

When the winter came you were not around
Through the bitter winds love could not be found
Where were you when I needed you, last winter, my love?

Oh I need you baby, I need you baby

Our love is at an end
But you say now you have changed,
But tomorrow will reflect love's past oh

Spring will fill the air and you will come around,
With your summer love that will let me down,
Where were you when I needed you, last winter, my love?

La la la la la, la la la la la
La la la la la, la la la la la
Where are you when I need you, like right now?
Right now, right now, right now

Where were you when I needed you last winter, my dear?
I need you baby, I need you baby, I need you baby
Oh, Where were you when I needed you last winter, last winter?

Yea, Need you Baby, need you, need you baby,
Oh, you want me too need you baby
Oh where were you when I needed you last, dear
Yea

Even if that sounds harsh, as I really am quite fond of the lady and think she will one day be a great person and just is passing a weird time, but here my take: Scratch one problem (and one solutiion) off my long list of problems I am having to deal with atm... Onwards!
