Welcome to War and Tactics!    War and Tactics Forum is currently undergoing some modifications that might disable features you are used to. This is unabvoidable as we have to update the forum engine to a new structure that is incompatible with many of the features we had used so far. The good news: WaT will be more secure and stable, and most of the features we uninstalled will be a natural part of the new structure anyway. For the rest we will be looking for solutions. Then, I am sure, you will remeber lively (dancing your guy to death? With Tequila in your left and a GT in your right?? Smiley ) how Rap started... Smiley

What a nice jam, L+Gs, Sugarhill Gang at their best, ´79 (there is better quality vids out there, but this for me presents this - then - "new" spirit best, a legend if legends exist...  champ,  "...because what you hear is *not* a test!...". Bang bang the boogie to the beat, cielo! (and rock your derriere!  whiteflag):

They started (invented!) the Rap! Jam and Groove, all you want to dance, Sugarhill Gang: "Rappers Delight!"

Rattler

P.S.: OK, here for the anticipated multiple wish of a single lady in better quality and even with lyrics (nobody ever seems to remember the lyrics of this classic, I always have to go alone in Karaoke, and it took me 10 yrs to get it straight... Huh? whistle). Anyway, "...rock the rhythm that makes your body rock!.."

Rappers Delight

Hadn´t know the lady yet, but its a quite impressive song! I did some research, and came up with this unplugged version which for me makes more sense than the first vid, as the voice dominates over the pictures, even though unedited it is different from what the sound engineer´s machines magic does:

anna nalick - breathe (acoustic)

Reminds me a bit of Joni Mitchells "Both sides now" from ´70:

Quote
Rows and flows of angel hair
And ice cream castles in the air
And feather canyons ev'rywhere
I've looked at clouds that way
But now they only block the sun
They rain and snow on everyone
So many things I would have done
But clouds got in my way
I've looked at clouds from both sides now
From up and down, and still somehow
It's cloud illusions I recall
I really don't know clouds at all

Moons and Junes and Ferris wheels
The dizzy dancing way you feel
As ev'ry fairy tale comes real
I've looked at love that way

But now it's just another show
You leave 'em laughing when you go
And if you care, don't let them know
Don't give yourself away

I've looked at love from both sides now
From give and take, and still somehow
It's love's illusions I recall
I really don't know love at all

Tears and fears and feeling proud
To say "I love you" right out loud
Dreams and schemes and circus crowds
I've looked at life that way

But now old friends are acting strange
They shake their heads, they say I've changed
Well something's lost, but something's gained
In living ev'ry day

I've looked at life from both sides now
From win and lose and still somehow
It's life's illusions I recall
I really don't know life at all...

Joni Mitchell - Both Sides Now (Live, 1970)

Thanks for sharing! I always love to hear new (for me) artists!

P.S.: Just in case you do wonder what happened to song (and the singer), here they are, 30 yrs later, in a year 2000 Vincent Mendoza arrangement:

@ FACman: I also always put the both in the same cupboard, but just when I commented Sky´s song I first time realized how different they really are. This said, the "Foprever young" bit is the one that touches home nowadays with me... Smiley

@ Sky: We have a saying in Germany: "Children and Drunk state the truth", so maybe you want to think about reflecting on how much of that what you said and now repent is true to the point that it matters, for you or others?

Personally, I have learned over the years to accept that when any of us between my love an me said something really gross, then this was the beginning of the end, actually 100% in hindisght, the point when the respect is not really there anymore.

This said, nothing Rock´n Roll won´t cure on the long run: "When the situation is out of control then it´s time to rock and roll!"

Status quo-Roll Over Beethoven

And how would you know it is outta control? Well, there are indicators:

Quote
goodbye desperado
if they hadn't sucked out all the poison from your veins you'd be dead by now
too late frida kahlo
you could have the power of the phoenix and the flame if you knew just how

come the hour
come the mantra
repeat in defeat with the pots and the pans
walk away
walk on water
they're young then they're old then they don't give a damn

yeah but you
you're out of control
your babies are changing
you're out of control

sleepless situation
shaken by the clatter of the clinking on the bars of your private jail
twisted ultimatum
searching for a lifeline or a band aid for your sins in the morning mail

tow the line
floating islands
they're here and they're now but they're oceans away
tie them down
baby lions
you'll bleed and you'll plead and you'll beg them to stay

yeah but you
you're out of control
your babies are changing
you're out of control

don't be afraid now
your cover is blown
don't shed a tear now
your babies are grown

Tears for Fears - Out Of Control

Gorecki Symphony No. 3 "Sorrowful Songs" - Lento e Largo

Symphony No. 3, Op. 36, also known as the Symphony of Sorrowful Songs (Polish: Symfonia pie?ni ?a?osnych), is a symphony in three movements composed by Henryk Górecki in Katowice, Poland, between October and December 1976. The work is indicative of the transition between Górecki's dissonant earlier manner and his more tonal later style.

A solo soprano sings a different Polish text in each of the three movements. The first is a 15th-century Polish lament of Mary, mother of Jesus, the second a message written on the wall of a Gestapo cell during World War II, and the third a Silesian folk song of mother searching for son killed in the Silesian uprisings. The first and third movements are written from the perspective of a parent who has lost a child, and the second movement from that of a child separated from a parent. The dominant themes of the symphony are motherhood and separation through war.

Until 1992, Górecki was known only to connoisseurs, primarily as one of several composers responsible for the postwar Polish music renaissance. That year, Elektra-Nonesuch released a recording of the 15-year-old symphony that topped the classical charts in Britain and the United States. It has now sold more than a million copies, vastly exceeding the expected lifetime sales of a typical symphonic recording by a 20th-century composer. This success, however, has failed to generate interest in Górecki's other works.

Koen, this is truly impressive (I *love* the singer and am a fan for years), this is the 2nd movment then? And performed in Auschwitz itself? The video goes well with it, anybody knows who did it?

JFTR, while Isabel Bayrakdarian (one of the really "great" voices, she is Armenian/Canadian and born in Lebanon, an interesting mix in musicians every time) is indeed a Soprano, she performs in Alto mode here, probably because she loves to dedicate herself to this kind of mix music where the voce is not totally definded but the emotions transported matter.

Here one more of her, on the same line, but a bit more "Soprano", at least partially, when she performs "Dle Yaman" by Komitas Vardapet.

Komitas Vardapet (1869-1935) was a composer, musicologist and the founder of modern Armenian classic music. He survived the 1915 Genocide, but everybody he loved died in it and he never recovered from the emotional shock, leaving him to die in a psychiatric clinic.

Isabel Bayrakdarian: "Dle Yaman" (Lament)

Another one by Komitas, performed at the annual Armenian Genocide Memorial:

Isabel Bayrakdarian: "Andouni" (Homeless)
