Harro about his grandfather Unthersturmfuhrer Steinhofen commander of Tiger 1 tank "Tiki"

Well...ok a few words about my grandfather.

He joined the LAH in 1940 as a soldier in the 13th company,he saw action at the balkan, Greece, invasion of France and Russia.
He was a melder(dont know the right english word), a sniper and also a medic!!
He was promoted to Rttf. and received EK2,EK1, wound bage in black, combat clasp in silver!
After close combat on christmas 41, he was heavily wounded in his upper leg (bayonet-stab).
In 1942 he was transfered to the "3rd co./Pz.Reg.DR" based in Wilflecken, where the new Pz.Reg. was built.
There he got promoted to Unterscharfuhrer.
He received the spanish bravery medal 3rd class for his action at the Ladoga-sea!
After the loss of kharkov in early 1943, he made an "F├╝hrerbefehlsverweigerung" and therefor he was demoted!
He lost his rank and also all of his awards!!!!!!
(With much luck!!) And also an award-stop!!!!!!!!!!!!
After that he was promoted a second time to Strm,Rttf. and finally Uscha. in 1 1/2 month later!
He received the "Gefrierfleischorden" the east-medal!

He saw action at Kursk and the tankbattle of Kolomak (79 knocked out T34┬┤s and 1 KV1!!!!)
He also participated in the Russian springoffensive in 1944 in the Kampfgruppe Das Reich!

Normandy 1944, D-Day

Avranches, Coutances, Falaise-Gap etc.
In 1944 he was promoted to OScha.
He also was awarded a second time with the EK2, Pzkmpfabz. in Silver, woundbage in Silver

Battle of the Bulge (Grandmenil etc.)

Operation Spring Awaking april 1945.

A few days before the end he received his last promotion to Hscha.,
but it was never registered!
Finally he surrendered at Linz an der Traun (austria)
