Welcome to War and Tactics!    War and Tactics Forum is currently undergoing some modifications that might disable features you are used to. This is unabvoidable as we have to update the forum engine to a new structure that is incompatible with many of the features we had used so far. The good news: WaT will be more secure and stable, and most of the features we uninstalled will be a natural part of the new structure anyway. For the rest we will be looking for solutions. New ammo!

The MG 42 ( maschinengewehr 42) machinegun.

The successor for the famous MG34.
This weapon had some improvements over the mg34.
Its rate of fire was very high,  an answer to the Russian human wave attacks.
Main difference is the square mantlet around the barrel, new sights and an easy way to change the barrel.
On the right of the weapon you could pull a switch to open the mantlet, this freed the barrel. A new barrel could be placed in a few seconds.

Changing barrel

Firing the weapon gave it a very authentic sound like ripping through paper.
The weapon was made by 3 firms: Mauser, Gustloff and Johannes Grobfuss.
In the 1942-1944 timeframe over 400. 000 have been produced.
Like the Mg34 the weapon could be shoulder fired with a bipod or fired from under cover with the standard tripod.
