l'armée secrète (secret army) aka Belgian Legion aka Belgian Army

This army consisted mainly of ex-professional soldiers and left-behinds.
The goal was to erect a military regime under the control of the King, Leopold III.
In the summer of 1940, following the sucesses of the German army in Europe, they were convinced that peacetalks were not far away and that the Germans would retreat their forces back to Germany.
When the peacetalks would succeed they were afraid that certain groups were profite from the powervacuum and take control. Those groups were in favour of dividing Belgium in 2 or had extreem-left ideals.

In these months 3 military groups were contructed: het Belgian Legioen (Belgian Legion), La Phalange (the spear) en het Heropgericht Leger (the re-instated army)

June 1941 these groups decided to work together as 1 group: Het Legioen van België / the Belgian Legion

the patch of the Belgian Legion, the Lion stands for the link with the King, Leopold III

So these guys were some kind of independence movement or an underground government aimed at taking Belgium in the event of a power vacuum?

after the surrendering of the Belgian forces the King went into enprisonment to Germany (instead of fleeing to England).

it's a long story with the fact that Belgium has a north and south, different languages, different mentality and more....
the only thing that kept it together was the 'kingdom' but with the king in Germany, captured or visitor (opinions are very contrary), there was nothing to bind the north and south....so when the war would end and with the king still in Germany....you guess....they take control of the northern part, install a government and declare independence...

new government was installed and the return of the King was decided by a vote of the people, the northern was FOR his return, the southern part AGAINST

the King remained in Germany AFTER the war ended until 1950 when he agreed to give up his throne for his son...by his return the country was close to a civil revolution...

from then on the powers of the King have been limited every occasion and by now he's a king with a very limited amount of powers, last week another debate started to cut off his last strings to politics. in a couple of years he'll only have a ceremonial function. the money the royal family gets from the taxpayers is also been limited which will lead to several members being forced to get a job.

this is the speech where he talks to the people giving his powers to his son:
Abdication du roi Leopold III des Belges

this is a serie of documentaries on youtube, only in French:
Leopold III, la chute d'un Roi. 1/6

the complete story is very interesting, historical, political and much more...

Hey, I once will put up our Spanish history about our Royal Family, also *very* intersting (and disturbing from some POV).

I guess, monarchies are like that, as long as we do not end up as the English...

Not even a faint chance here for the Spanish to come out like them: An anecdote I already told Henk when he visited me:

One day, my wife (long before being it) in summer went with her moto from Port d`Andratx to Camp de Mar over the mountains, when suddenly her moto stopped: No gasoline left (worst unthinkable disaster for a pilot, but she was never Smiley ).

Anyway, suddenly that car stops behind her, a nice gentleman gets out, asks about the trouble, and even has some gasoline to share, on she went, fine and not unusal so far for this island.

About three week later, while watching the news on TV, she suddenly says: "But that is the guy that gave me some gasoline!"... Turns ut, it was Juan Carlos... The King! (and at that time she had not even realized)...!

*That´s* a royal family... Smiley

Last week, one of our crazy but well loved reporters from "La Sexta" = Program 6 (Jordi Évole, "El Follonero" = literally "The Fuck- Upper", in a positive way: A guy that stirs up everything... Smiley, the funny guy with the glasses) wanted to give a present to the English Queen in an official act in a Brithish Cadet Academy, a ham from Spain (by now you should know that the Spanish have a knack about their hams! Knipoog ), but the protocol made it impossible (I have lived it myself with princess Anne as photographer: In UK you are not allowed to talk to Royalty if they dont ask you someting, and if they do you may only answer "Y" or "N"...):

(Dont laugh about the Spanish accent... Smiley I do, and that´s about enough Smiley Here the trailer, El Follonero trying to - food - bribe journos of the Financial Times into writing positively about Spanish economy, the queen thingy after 1:30 into the vid)

El Follonero viaja hasta Inglaterra para darle un jamón a la Reina Isabel II

No programs like this elsewhere, no? (here in Spain the guy managed ot exchange the tie of the King - voluntarily, kind of - to one of a politician the King does not like... Smiley )

I am actually somewhat familiar with the sentiments between the Flemish and the Walloons.  I wrote a short paper on that for a University assignment.

I'm afraid I haven't been following it very closely at all.
I was lucky enough to stay with a rather regular Flemish family for a few months so I was able to see many parts of life there that a tourist would miss.  Also, I wasn't there for school or anything, so I did get to see rather normal life.
Yeah, they wanted the southern part to split off and move to Antarctica or something.

hahaha typical.  Either way, the desire seems to be to get rid of the southern half.
Of course, what to do with Brussels is always an issue.
