I am told it is an early armoured recovery vehicle but some have also said mine clearance.

I have seen that one before... Not to be confused with this one, though: http://www.panzer-modell.de/berichte/raeumer_s/raeumer_s.htm - that's indeed a mine clearing vehicle, but NOT the above - obviously.

here some of the latter from a Spanish site I frequent, it says only one has ever been finished:



I found another picture of the Alkett mine sweeper tractor, the vehicle in the rear behind it looks like what the pic shows, so I would guess it would make it a Lauster experimental towing vehicle (WARGEL LW-5), below some pix of models, 1st and 3rd in reverse orientation:







Don´t know whether that helps, I have no fucking clue about WWII vehicles at all, but it sure looks fairly similar.

The problem is we do have two different vehicles here who look pretty similar but aren't. Maybe I can remember where I have seen the first one...
