Welcome to War and Tactics!    War and Tactics Forum is currently undergoing some modifications that might disable features you are used to. This is unabvoidable as we have to update the forum engine to a new structure that is incompatible with many of the features we had used so far. The good news: WaT will be more secure and stable, and most of the features we uninstalled will be a natural part of the new structure anyway. For the rest we will be looking for solutions. Large photos (and I am not speaking of the physical pixel*pixel size but rather of the file size) slow loading times of a forum page a lot:

If you have your standard 800*400 pixel photo it will as .jpeg have a file size of 250-350 kb file size (you can see the size by rightclicking on a picture and check it´s "properties"). Now let´s say you post 10 of these pictures, you will have a post size of around 3Mb, which will take 1-2 minutes to load even on cable (on modem you can go and have a coffee while waiting for the post to show). Now imagine somebody else responds with another 10 photos, and you will see the problem (our "where we live" thread, page 1, takes approximately half an hour to load on modem as I yesterday found out... Bedroefd )

For this reason we need to optimize our photos before we upload them to WaT: This will reduce loading times, and also our bandwith used (and paid !!).

Now, how do you optimize a photo?

If you have photoshop or other optimizing software you can do it with this. There is free image optimizing osoftware out there that you can download and use: http://www.fileguru.com/downloads/optimize_pc

If you do not have optimizing software or no clue how to use it, there are online tools to do the job for you, I recommend SiteReportCards Image Reducer http://www.sitereportcard.com/imagereducer.php as it compresses all types of pix, .jpg, .gif and .png

It is easy to use:

You enter a photo URL or upload one from your machine, and then the tool offers you a vertical list of compressed photos, all with data about quality and file size (more compressd = less quality). You now start at the bottom (the highest compression/worst quality) checking upwards until you find the picture that gives you your minimum acceptable visual quality, and download this one to your hard drive for use. In general a quality of 20 or 30 is sufficient for our puropses, and this normally means a reduction fo file size between 60-80%

An example:

This pic, posted in one of our threads, has 265kb file size:

Now, using the online optimizer from above, it was easily reduced to 88kb file size, that is a third of the size (and a third of the loading time) and that at still acceptable quality:

More on compression and optimization you can read here:

Hope this helps,
