Welcome to War and Tactics!    War and Tactics Forum is currently undergoing some modifications that might disable features you are used to. This is unabvoidable as we have to update the forum engine to a new structure that is incompatible with many of the features we had used so far. The good news: WaT will be more secure and stable, and most of the features we uninstalled will be a natural part of the new structure anyway. For the rest we will be looking for solutions. This reply might be a bit late, but of interest nontheless: The above soldiers are form the SS-Standarte "Germania", when the Waffen-SS was still the SS-VT, picture most probably taken in France.

That is indeed a "2" denoting the Standarte "Germania". There were three of those in teh SS-Vt, no.1 being "Deutschland" and no.3 being "Der Führer". Those numbers were dropped, though, when the untis received their honorary titles; therefore, the above soldiers would 'just' be members of SS-Standarte 2.

Quote
SS-Standarte Germania was formed 1934 as SS-Standarte 3 / VT around a cadre from Politische Bereitschaft Hamburg (Politische Bereitschaft SS 2). It was soon renamed SS-Standarte 2 / VT when Hitler ordered that SS-Leibstandarte Adolf Hitler not would be included in the numbering sequence. It was renamed SS-Standarte Germania at the Parteitag in Nuremberg 1936.

It took apart in the annexation of Austria and was responsible for the security during the Italian leader Benito Mussolini's visit to Germany. It took part in the annexation of Sudetenland attached to army units. It later served as a guard regiment in Prague, as Wach-Regiment des Reichsprotektors von Böhmen und Mähren, until July 1939.

It took part in the invasion of Poland attached to 14. Armee and following that campaign it was used to form SS-Division Verfügungstruppe (later renamed Das Reich).
