Welcome to War and Tactics!    War and Tactics Forum is currently undergoing some modifications that might disable features you are used to. This is unabvoidable as we have to update the forum engine to a new structure that is incompatible with many of the features we had used so far. The good news: WaT will be more secure and stable, and most of the features we uninstalled will be a natural part of the new structure anyway. For the rest we will be looking for solutions. After July 2011 Germany will have no conscripts anymore, obligatory military service has been canceled.

So, we will  have a totally professional army only.

Personally, I dont think this is a good idea:

Our concept of "citizen in uniform" has not only served us well during the last 6 decades, its installation was a the result of a lesson learned in the 20s when the army shot at its own people. It was assumed that by having a steady influx of "normal" citizens in the army this would prevent a politization and protect it against neo-nazi attempts to take over, etc.

I think this still holds true, a professional-only army attracts all kind of weirdos.

I disagree.

The same discussion was held here in Holland in 1995 when we abandoned the draftsystem.
Now 15 years later a lot has changed.
No weirdos, no right wing radicals, no Neo nazis and no problems.
The solution is a good working selection procedure.
With a good set of rules you can wield out the wrong people.
Psychological selection is just as important as a physical selection.

Now there is a point in having a draft.
Young people learned discipline, something they do not learn anymore today........
