Welcome to War and Tactics!    War and Tactics Forum is currently undergoing some modifications that might disable features you are used to. This is unabvoidable as we have to update the forum engine to a new structure that is incompatible with many of the features we had used so far. The good news: WaT will be more secure and stable, and most of the features we uninstalled will be a natural part of the new structure anyway. For the rest we will be looking for solutions. Quote
The Royal Navy have forced heavily armed Spanish ships to retreat after they tried to invade British waters around Gibraltar.
Brit warships were scrambled to see off heavily-armed Spanish patrol boats that entered British waters without permission to inspect fishing boats.
The incident echoes historic battles between the Spanish and Sir Francis Drake and the sinking of the Armada in 1588.

The Foreign Office has said it is taking the incident "very seriously".
The British territory on the south coast of Spain has been a continuing source of dispute between the two countries.
British ownership of the Rock of Gibraltar has long been a source of wounded Spanish pride, even though it's 30,000 residents are fiercely loyal to the Queen.

A Foreign Office spokesman said: "It's a violation of British sovereignty and something we take very seriously indeed.
"We have made strong representations to the Spanish government. We hope they will stop doing it."

The latest incident took place on May 8 - a day after Gibraltar vowed to contest EU moves to hand responsibility for the area around the Rock to Spain.
Gibraltar's chief minister, Peter Caruana, yesterday accused Spanish politicians of trying to sabotage relations across the border.
And a spokesman for Gibraltar's opposition party said: "This latest incident is far more serious than anything that has happened before. It represents a frontal challenge to British sovereignty, jurisdiction and control over Gibraltar's territorial sea.

"As such, the UK must not only respond to Spain, but must also extract guarantees from Madrid that it will never happen again."

There has been no official reaction from the Spanish Government.
The Spanish have refused to accept that Gibraltar has territorial waters because they are not mentioned in the 1713 Treaty of Utrecht, which handed it to Britain.

A week before the latest incident a Spanish launch manned by paramilitary cops was sent into Gibraltar's waters before being seen off by a Royal Navy patrol boat.

That kind of news make me laugh.

With the pussy government we have actually world "war" does not exist. Our army is just an army of sandwich developers and road makers. Even Marrocco can abuse of us that we will never use weapons, just will tell them Please, don´t do that"

2nd, the real situation as I heard in Spain it´s that armed patrols of Guardia Civil passed by Gibraltar in persecution of tobacco and drugs dealers and the alarm started from the British side. I do not think in actual moment Spain is for any kind of agression.

Distorsion of reality, when everybody knows there are thousand of illegal tobacco and drug tons in a year coming into Europe. The correct acttitude will be cooperate against that and stop thinking nonsenses.

Best regards

Hola Solideo!

Great to have you here!

I think I will post (have to look the stuff up, I have posted it somewhere else before but forgot where) the (hilariously humorous) "invasion" of our little island "Pantaleu" right in front of my house some yrs ago (during the Parsley Island Incident with Marrocco) by some British journalists of t"the Guardian" that claimed it for the British Crown (and found themselves with bad luck when they asked for the aircraft carrier or at least some battle ships to protect it at home  hihi, and with equally bad luck when they tried - on a Saturday afternoon - to inform the Spanish government about things and didnt find anyone that spoke English except a cleaning woman in the defense department who - not surprisingly - turned out to be from Poland and did not have the faintest clue what they were talking about  hihi).

Nice read, and on the same level as these routine vice-versa accusations of the both (befriended) governments over Gibraltar.

I understand, though, that the diplomatic departments of each of those governments have to raise it now an then, just for the (possible but improbable) day whre they meet in front of an international court or SC to ask a decision, that is when they will point oout that it all was stated before.

Kind regards,

Rattler

These kind of stupid news just usually appear when government has some dirty incident to hide, and an international probability of territorial conflict is enough to distract the masses. Perhaps some important member of the government had been photographed wit secret documents in his hand, any royal member had worn some nazi clothes in a party, some pendrive with fiscality had been lost or whatever... anyway the news was as stupid who could think it was true.

Best regards

No but my wife is.  She is a Jerezana, from Jerez de la Fra. of course.  Our two boys have Spanish citzenship as well as American.  My wife's mom and sibilings all live in Jerez.  She gets to visit a lot and I try to get there as often as possible.  I really enjoy Spain and love Andalucia inparticular.
