7 People Killed by Old Bomb in Western Myanmar

YANGON, Myanmar (AP) — An official says seven people were killed when an old World War II bomb they found in a river exploded in western Myanmar.

A security official told The Associated Press on Thursday that the dead included two children. He asked not be identified because he did not have clearance to speak to the media.

The seven found the bomb floating in a river in Rakhine state Wednesday and it exploded when they retrieved it from the water.

World War II bombs are still found in Myanmar, but this is the largest number of people killed by an old bomb in recent decades.

Rakhine state saw battles between occupying Japanese forces and British troops during World War II.

NOTE: Myanmar is the current date state of what was Burma in World War II. Officially the Republic of the Union of Myanmar (Listeni/?mj??n?m?r/; Pyidaunzu Thanm?da My?ma Nainngandaw, pronounced [pjìdà?u?z? ?à??m?da? mj?mà nài??à?d??]), is a country in Southeast Asia. The country is bordered by the People's Republic of China on the northeast, Laos on the east, Thailand on the southeast, Bangladesh on the west, India on the northwest, and the Bay of Bengal to the southwest, with the Andaman Sea defining its southern periphery.

Yangon pronounced [jà??òu? mjo?]; also known as Rangoon, literally: "End of Strife", is a former capital of Burma (Myanmar) and the capital of Yangon Region (formerly Yangon Division). Although the military government has officially relocated the capital to Naypyidaw since March 2006,[3] Yangon, with a population of over four million, continues to be the country's largest city and the most important commercial center.
