Welcome to War and Tactics!    War and Tactics Forum is currently undergoing some modifications that might disable features you are used to. This is unabvoidable as we have to update the forum engine to a new structure that is incompatible with many of the features we had used so far. The good news: WaT will be more secure and stable, and most of the features we uninstalled will be a natural part of the new structure anyway. For the rest we will be looking for solutions. I have a colleague with the reserves who spent some years in the legion.
I shall try to find out who it is and get him to this forum Knipoog

Sean, when you are back, ran into this vid by chance about retired Legionaries, care to comment from the veteran side? The video treats the retirement issues of Legion veterans, mainly from the SEA disaster (it claims 35k KIA?), and the problems that the survivors face when retired.

What I've never really understood about the Legion is why France needed to hire mercenaries. Are French soldiers not good enough to protect French interests around the world? No other major nation that I know of uses mercenaries except France.

Interesting.

Good Hunting.

Yes, I'm aware that many countries have "foreigners" in their ranks.

But I'm not talking past history. I'm talking since WWII is over. Current history.

We both know that's not what I'm talking about and that the French Foreign Legion doesn't fall into that category.

Good Hunting.

I agree, foreing troops were always (and are still) integrated into national forces of many nations.

Example Spain: 35% of our regular troops are Equadorians or Columbians, in the Paras this goes even higher.

I have a problem to understad this policy, because some of my Columbian friends that serve here, when asked - and despite having a Spanish passport and having sworn to the crown and flag - would always defend Columbia against Spain in a conflict and decisively feel "Colubian" and *not* Spanish. I can understand and share their feelings (I am and feel German after all myself), but I cannot see them fighting for Spain as a Spaniard should the shit hit the fan.

Mercenaries in the strict sense (civilians paid for fighting) are today employed in Iraq and Afghanistan by all nations in a number totalling 80% of regular troops.

Briain has used foreigners...... Gurkhas they are from Nepal so in a way they are "Mercenaries" also foreigners fought for Israel and also during the Rhodesian bush war in the 70's.Many foreigners fought against Franco in the Spanish Cival war, also "mercenaries" were used in the American War of Independance, it is not a new thing. Also I do not considder myself a mercenary I was a Scotsman fighting for France and not for profit.
The French have very good soldiers fighting in the regular army. The Legion Etrangere has been going since 1831.
