Well it's up above zero here today too, but only just.  Yesterday, however,  we had quite the ice-storm.  Here's a few pics:

As I live (as many ohters here) live in the EU, here the latest news, absurd as it can get (maybe bizarre?):

Quote
According to a number of Polish media reports, the European Commission has officially categorized snails as "inland fish" in order to allow French snail farmers to receive subsidies.

From the beginning of February, snails will no longer be snails according to European law. France, the world's biggest consumer of the mollusk, has apparently successfully persuaded the European Commission to subsidize snail breeding in the same way fisheries are funded.

The snail ruling joins the growing list of EU peculiarities. According to other famous EC directives, a carrot is a fruit.

The EU also regulates the gap between the rungs of ladders to prevent people from the "risky practice" of resting their knees on the next rung up.

And I had been laughing my arse off about strange US laws...

I read a while ago that France was the reservoir for snails in Europe but since they were exporting way too much to Azia the snail population in Europe was in danger....and some weeks later I read your post....strange, not?

I can tell you that in Europe snails are not in danger of extinction:

I have to get about 50 off my fruit trees *every* night, I breed them for food (got some 2000+ = 15 kg right now in 6 cages), and I think the french way of eating them is simply over rated (we here in Spain know a lot more about them).

Examples:

1. Typical French snail dish (6, 9 or 12 in a more or less interesting sauce, but it is the sauce that makes the dish worthy), having been taken out of their houses, prepped with spice and put in for optical pleasure, they think that less is more:

2. Typical Mallorquin (= Spanisch) take on things, 1, 2 or 3 kg+ in a good broth for 8 invites, coming as they were caught, after 3 weeks in fennel for cleaning and taste, we think more is just about enough:

Hot (as in spicey):

With vegetables, Mallorquin Style:

With wine and pigeons, as a rice plate (like Paella for fish):

How to prepare them:

Incomparable!

I'm sorry, but I just don't like the idea of eating snails,  they remind me of worms and slugs too much.  Have you heard of snail butter?   Ik zeg niets

stress...stress.... (positive stress to clarify  Knipoog )

some inside info....when Karine and I got together I was 31 and Ka 42, we decided then, both financial and mental unstable, not to buy an expensive house with a massive 20-25 years loan.... wise decision.... we had time to grow from 2 to 2-in-1 and enjoy life...

flipside of the coin is that we live SMALL....30m² with bad thermal isolation etc... altough we have 800m² garden/forest to enjoy...

but after the last long, cold and dark winter....we're afraid to enter the next one...too cold inside....too dark etc etc....

so at this moment we're investigating the possibilities...or putting a new wooden house where we live now or buy a house somewhere else...

we heard of a house for sale not so far from here...CHEAP....and affordable....half-open...not too big (for when we become old) but big enough to enjoy my collection of music, books etc...
the house belonged to an old woman who died, she has 2 sons, one of them lives most of the time in Azia, the other one lives locally...none of them needs the money...
it should be around 100.000-110.000€ which is cheap, mostly houses in Belgium go around 200.000€

my wifes daughter knows the family so we need here to start the first comms...she comes home this evening from holiday...

so you can imagine we're very focused on our new future.... Brede lach
