Change of spectrum and inspired by Heinrichs comment:

As I am now finally made to be leaving my house and live as a bum in the woods it is time to say goodbye to many things I have cherished, beneath them also being my nice and sacred vinyl collection.

As I will only either sell them as a whole (some 700, most first pressings, all in rather excellent shape - just not taken out in ten years - ending at 1985 more or less including priceless stuff like first Zappa R+R record etc) or throw them into the sea I am now going through them to see which ones I will miss most, here are some of the beatuies I just ran into today:

A big focus of my collection was always R+B, Jazz, Jazzrock (where I come from, kind of the intellectuals R+B) and combined this with groove, groove and more groove. This might go funky sometimes, rocky, decent bar pop/background stuff, and dance.

Here a great example, had in the last 15 years not even thought once of the guy, anybody remember Roy Ayers? Worked later with Jamiroquai?

From 1983 and in my colection the album "Lots of Love" with rather not only jazzy but also some hard stuff I put up as DJ in the late 80s. Seems in this time he could not make up his mind where to go: Jazz? Funk? Soul? Two examples from "Lots of Love", first for the DJ table, 2nd for the bar after disco:

Roy Ayers - Fast Money

Roy Ayers - And then we were one

In the 90s then, made up his mind and came up with some of the best stuff I know from this direction, easy, funky, dancable and - his pearly xylophone solos sitting on a running bass accompanied by a nice relaxed beat - GROOVY (turn up volume well, low level recording), a must in every DJs today chillout box. If heard low volume you can just lay back and go to sleep, turn volume up and all your limbs will start moving autonomously if youre into dancing...:

Roy Ayers - E Funk

I got to know this song on a collection-cd where this song was followed by Deep Purple

I always liked it, I like the changes in rhythm.... you never know what they really want, a slow song, a faster one? a rock or a pop song?

So, I walk into this bar (again, and sorry!: I *AM* a bar man) and hear a song we all know, but in a version I had not even dreamed of to hear (and believe me, I know about 15 versions of it), with a voice emulating a sax where normallly the idea is at reverse (Tokunbo Akinro = vocals):

Tok Tok Tok - 50 Ways To Leave Your Lover

The bar owner, Italian, a real bum with music, and we dont know whether we love or hate each other (day form decides momentarily) realizes I pricked my ears (yes, even humans react to corporal langue sometimes, not just dogs!) and treated me with about 50 songs of the same band in a row, all so loud that the other clients left, frankly had not ever heard one of those before (and I a*am * a music freak, following everything up and down and consider myself well versed in current music. Well: You always find something new to learn even though youre smart, no? iloveme ).

Now, and as I do this every year, it is about time I make up my mind about "The Voice", "The Singer", "The Performer" or "The Band Of The Year" from my POV ...

(2008, e.g. the Voice Of The Year for me was Amadine Burgeois >>
Code:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KZfgbGAwdJ0
,

... as published, my "Ballad Pop" revelation this year - also published - was Tiromanchino ).

Now, "Tok Tok Tok" made without any question the latter: Of the 50 songs the bar owner tortured me with through almost three hours (by volume, that is, songs were great! Volume UP recommended for most of them...), I did not hear one bad, many good, super covers, and some galactical stuff by them themselves, truly went flabbergasted after this show. What a voice on this chillout beat, I could not invent it better...! A mix of Jazz, Chill, Funk, Dance, and all to perfection, the (few) covers suit them well... Mainstream? Yes, but the right one...

I searched The Tube (as you can imagine), did not find as much as I had had to listen to today (actually way less than expected, the bar owner had most off a concert, "live", that is where they make good in earnest), but some nice stuff for starters I found anyway...

Prick up your ears, folks, and dont forget the name of My Band Revelation 2010: "Tok Tok Tok"...

tok tok tok

Tok Tok Tok - Living Hell

Some of the live stuff I was talking about, those concerts are worth their money I you are well accompanied, methinks:

Tok Tok Tok - Although he hurts me - Bridgestone Music Festival '09

Tok Tok Tok - SP - MAIO 09 KAKAOS (Embedding disabled, limit reached)

Tok Tok Tok - Live (Embedding disabled, limit reached)

an ample spectrum, they do everything from rock to pop to jazz, and all well...! Their hommage to Michael Jackson, again some of the best stuff I have come to be aware along this line:

TOK TOK TOK - Michael Jackson (Embedding disabled, limit reached)

Definitely. My. Band. Revelation. Of. The. Year (and, yes, I realize I simply did not have them on my radar though they have been around since 2005, what can I say?)  troutslap    hdbng

Enjoy,

Imagine there's no Heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today

Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace

You may say that I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world

You may say that I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as one

okies, as you want some ´80 dance stuff, just to help you get started your channel:

One of *my* dance tracks (I dubbed this dance music genre "Dumb" on my comp for the kind of beat below, but (and only then) after a few GTs makes for great flirts on the floor, I like it...  banana):

Dj Tonka - 84

Good Luck!

Rattler

P.S.: Any ImageReady artists out there plz add a frew frames to my banana self and send the result to TA, it is out of synch with 80% of the dance tracks... R.

Crossposting, but just in case nobody saw the other thread and as it is also well placed here, even if youre not a JC fan:

Quote
There ain't no grave
Can hold my body down
There ain't no grave
Can hold my body down

When I hear that trumpet sound
I'm gonna rise right out of the ground
Ain't no grave
Can hold my body down

Well, look way down the river
And what do you think I see
I see a band of angels
And they're coming after me

Ain't no grave...

Well, look down yonder, Gabriel
Put your feet on the land and sea
But Gabriel, don't you blow your trumpet
Until you hear from me

Ain't no grave...

Well meet me, Jesus, meet me
Meet me in the middle of the air
And if these wings don't fail me,
I will meet you anywhere

Ain't no grave...

Well meet me, Mother and Father,
Meet me down the river road
And Mama, you know that I'll be there
When I check in my load

Ain't no grave...

There ain't no grave
Can hold my body down

AIN'T NO GRAVE (Can Hold My Body Down) Johnny Cash

Weekend, and currently watching (for probably over the years the third time) the intriguing and at the same time utterly disturbing movie "Southern Comfort" about this fatal NG maneuver in Lousianna, right now going through the part where - towards the end of the movie - the two leftover survivors voluntarily have to join the party in the Cajun village, one of the better Cajun pieces, and sure the best version of it that I have heard ("Parlez Nous A Boire"):

Cajun music from Southern Comfort

From the same movie, the title song ("Final Cover"), by Ry Cooder:

Theme From Southern Comfort

For those who dont know the movie (or under another title: In Germany its called "Die B-Kompanie (Bravo Company)", and here in Spain it is titled "La Presa (Prey") ), as a gimmick the original trailer from 1981:

Looks like in course of the day we will lose a great one (my favorite classic Flamenco singer, I have in the past posted various of his songs here, e.g. his hypnotic "First we take Manhatten" version):

Enrique Morente, 67 years old, entered hospital on DEC 4 to be operated on a cancer of the osoephagus, after the operation he had some cardiac complications which made another operation necessary last Thursday.

During this 2nd operation he suffered an ictus and went into coma, now the news reaches us that he has entered irreversible brain death and is only be kept alive by the machines.

As Morente is apart from his classical Flamenco also so well known for his crossover experiments with other musicians and music/art forms (video, photography) that he enriched with this broken voice of his, I will leave the classical stuff out and present this other side:

First, a work again with Lagartija Nick, the musicalizacion of a video project over a poem by Garcia Lorca from 1936, "Ciuadad sin sueño" ("The city that never sleeps") a hommage to his Brooklyn exile during the Spanish Civil War, which is conisdered the most important anti war poem ever written (translation by me):

Quote
No duerme nadie por el cielo. Nadie, nadie.
No duerme nadie.

No one is sleeping in heaven. Nobody, nobody.
No one is sleeping.
The creatures of the moon sniff and prowl about their cabins.
Living iguanas will come to bite the men who do not dream
and those fleeing with a broken heart will meet on the corner
the incredible quiet alligator beneath the tender protest of the stars.

No duerme nadie por el mundo. Nadie, nadie.
No duerme nadie.
porque tiene un paisaje seco en la rodilla;

Nobody is sleeping in the world. Nobody, nobody.
No one is sleeping.
A dead man in a graveyard far away
has been complaining for three years
because he has a dry spot on his knee;
and that boy they buried this morning cried so much
it was necessary to call the dogs to be quiet.

No es sueño la vida. ¡Alerta! ¡Alerta! ¡Alerta!

Life is no dream. Warning! Warning! Warning!
We fall down the stairs to eat damp earth
or climb to the edge of the snow listening to the choir of the dead dahlias.
But there is no forgetting, no sleep:
Raw flesh. Kisses tie mouths
in a tangle of veins,
and for those who hurt their hurt will last forever
and whoever is afraid of death will be carrying it on his shoulders.

One day
Horses wil live in the taverns
and the furious ants
will attack the yellow skies that have taken refuge in the eyes of the cows.

On another day
we will witness dissceted butterflies resurrect
and though walking through a landscape of gray sponges and silent boats
we will see our ring flashing brilliantly and will have roses spring from our tongues.

Warning! Warning! Warning!
Those who still have marks of the claws and the thunderstorms,
that boy who cries because he does not know about the invention of the bridge
or hat dead man who only consists of a head and a shoe:
We must carry them to the wall where the iguanas and snakes are waiting,
where the bear fangs are waiting,
where the mummified hand of a child is waiting,
and where camel skin stands on end with a violent blue shudder.

No duerme nadie por el cielo. Nadie, nadie.
No duerme nadie.
Pero si alguien cierra los ojos,
¡azotadlo, hijos míos, azotadlo!
Haya un panorama de ojos abiertos
y amargas llagas encendidas.
No duerme nadie por el mundo. Nadie, nadie.
Ya lo he dicho.
No duerme nadie.

No one is sleeping in heaven. Nobody, nobody.
No one is sleeping.
But if someone closes his eyes,
Whip him, boys, whip him!
There is a landscape of open eyes
and bitter wounds on fire.
Nobody is sleeping in the world. Nobody, nobody.
Now I've said it.
No one is sleeping.
But if someone at night finds he has too much mucus in his temples,
open the stage trapdoors so he can in the moonlight see
the false/lying goblets, the poison, and the skulls in the theatre.

Ciudad sin sueño (OMEGA - Morente y Lagartija Nick)

Another one, a bit more traditional, just one year old, "Nana del oriente" (Sleeping song for the East) where he with his daughter gives voice to a great series of photos he took on some of his travels, all about "Mother" ("Ma(d)re").

Enrique Morente - Nana de oriente - nuevo album 2009 - "Ma´re"

Last, very active in church, here his version of Cohen´s "Halleluhia" in a series produced by the Church of Philadelphia, "Artists with God".

12. Enrique Morente - Aleluya

Today is a really sad day for Flamenco, for music, and for art in general.

As I am taking heat already from FB, one good friend here and from my two home pages for this above article, let me make it clear for those who did not get it yet:

I did not say those songs published were representative of Enrique Morentes work (actually, I have published many others in this same thread, use the "Search" feature plz, you will find a more ample vision of his work), and I know they are hard on the traditionalists ear, I meant them seriously to show his ample form of thinking and feeling art, estending the simples soleas, bulerias or tango to something way more ideological and ample. For me he was great not for his music, voice or lyrics only, but really for the intensity he transmitted...

For consolidation of those cross with me (and especially my friend and Flamenco freak S., I am sure you will understand there was never even the sightest offence meant), here some of his traditional stuff, and now, after it is out in the open, I may say with all my heartfelt sadness:

D.E.P.!  We will miss you seriously.

Rattler

With "Tomatito" in la "Alhambra", again in one of his efforts to "join all good people", of course - in this place more then ever - fully givng credit to the Arabic roots of Flamenco:

MORENTE SUEÑA LA ALHAMBRA

One "Granadina" that says 1980 but is surely older, to show where he came from traditionally, what a voice at that time!

Enrique Morente - Granaina (1980)

And, my favorite of his ever (and I am sure I *did* post this one before, though I cannot find the fantastic and very straightforward poetic lyrics anywhere), from a Carlos Saura film, the style is "Solea por Buleria", no matter what others want to sell it as (e.g. as Seguiriya). And it holds one "Copla" line I have taken to heart, explaining "love" verus "passion" (4:05 minutes into the vid) "How can you compare a puddle to a fountain!? Comes out the cruel sun, and the puddle vanishes, wheras the fountain...  -  ...will persist..."

If you listen to this part and the way he presents it (4:05 into the vid and thats why I put it in Spanish so everybody can follow the song at this point), then you will understand a little bit of this art: This is the intensity I am refering to.

ENRIQUE MORENTE

the one I was referring to

Yep, I see.

That was the one I refered to also with the part I added:

Quote
it holds one "Copla" line I have taken to heart, explaining "love" verus "passion" (4:05 minutes into the vid) "How can you compare a puddle to a fountain!? Comes out the cruel sun, and the puddle vanishes, wheras the fountain...  -  ...will persist..."

If you listen to this part and the way he presents it (4:05 into the vid and thats why I put it in Spanish so everybody can follow the song at this point), then you will understand a little bit of this art: This is the intensity I am refering to.
