Welcome to War and Tactics!    War and Tactics Forum is currently undergoing some modifications that might disable features you are used to. This is unabvoidable as we have to update the forum engine to a new structure that is incompatible with many of the features we had used so far. The good news: WaT will be more secure and stable, and most of the features we uninstalled will be a natural part of the new structure anyway. For the rest we will be looking for solutions. Colorised postcard image of Japanese tank, c1935-45.  Any help in identifying it would be much appreciated.

Another postcard with another unidentified Japanese tank.  this image is even more propagandistic in the sense that it seems to commemorate a specific event and has some other nationalistic trappings in the form of the two Japanese flags in the border.

Looks Japanese enough, but I do not think it is a HA-GO (95) - but then, I am in no way an authority on that, ask me planes, please... Smiley :

Type 95 HA-GO has:
- two (not three) top chain suspending wheels
- suspenders between main axles
- different gun mount and rounded turret form

Type 95 HA-GO

The 2nd pic might be most probably a Type 89:

You will have to google images for "Type 89 CHI-RO": Cannot currently post the link and pic, the software censores it... Need to come on as TechAdmin to solve that prob... Stupid censoring... I never asked software to replace "~ a k i r k" with a censor smiley...

I believe it's a Type 89 OTSU.

Look at the track and wheel guards.

Only one operational Japanese tank I know of has the guard.
Of course that tank doesn't have to be operational. It could be a prototype but I'm pretty sure it's the Type 89 OTSU.

Also, look at the gun and the configuration of the support under the gun.

Good Hunting.

thank you Robert Hilton for the first picture ID and thanks to MadRussian for the ID on the 2nd picture.
I have a Japanese friend who now translates a lot of postcard captions for me; I will ask her what the 2nd postcard says and what the writing on the first tank's side says, too. (I assume it's the unit info.)

It's not good to assume. You may be surprised at what the writing says.

Good Hunting.

Over a dozen Japanese tanks on 'parade' at an unknown location on this real photo postcard.  Can someone confirm that this is a Type-97 "Chi-Ha"?

The front two tanks are both of different models. Look at the way the turret sits on the body. They are not the same tank.

Also the one on the right has a much broader body than the tank on the left.

Good Hunting.

Thanks, MR.  You know I saw that but thought it was some trick of the eye caused by the angle and distance.  the front tank on the left doesn't have the hoop-like bars around the top of the turret either.

So, the right one (and most in the background) are the Type 97 "Chi Ha".

How about Type-95 "Ha-Go" for the left one?

The hoop like bars are radio antenna's. They are command tanks.

Actually, as photographer and examining again after MR´s input, I would still lean to the same impression: I think the distortions are caused by taking the pic with a +300 mm (for 24/36 that is) lens and the tanks are way much more spread out than it seems. A bit of the effect like we journos do every year with traffic jams:

A "normal" (this does not exist for a photographer, but for the public sake lets use the word) photo would look like this:

Your section head requires a traffic jam photo (because there were some)? Do this: Vhange lens to long, go far away, and "compress":

Only the trained eye will see the difference: I)n photo one the sizes of vehicles diminish rapidly, in pic 2 not (make yourself an excerpt of the horizon of pic 1 to see the effect of lens change)

I think, here it is the same: The front tanks are more or less in their correct proportions, the more distant ones are compressed and so look different (and it looks this was a glass plate camera with the front lense inclined right, as here the effect also goes to left)

This said, the difference on the turrets are probably HF or UHF antennae

EDIT: Ouch, always read a thread to the end before replying, MR had it on the head before me...

Nope....I'm a photographer too. Those two tanks are not the same.

Look at the width of the body. The one on the right has a wider body. The placement of hatches etc on the front of the hull for the two tanks is different as well.

Unless angle can put entirely different hatches on a tank then those two are not the same.

Good Hunting.
