The article quotes the veteran who thinks "it's disgraceful" as wanting to "burn them all" ['them' being the patches].  How does destroying all memory of the unit which did the atrocities help future generations to remember the atrocities and make sure this doesn't happen again?  Unfortunately, we need to remember what we're capable of.

Sure, the patches aren't the only way to remember.  But if all evidence of a crime is destroyed except for 88-yr-old's memories, the way lies open to forget.
