Welcome to War and Tactics!    War and Tactics Forum is currently undergoing some modifications that might disable features you are used to. This is unabvoidable as we have to update the forum engine to a new structure that is incompatible with many of the features we had used so far. The good news: WaT will be more secure and stable, and most of the features we uninstalled will be a natural part of the new structure anyway. For the rest we will be looking for solutions. America Lifts Ban on HIV Infected Travelers

I was very surprised, in the negative way, when I heard this!

a ban of 22 years and nobody ever tried to change it?

Quote
After 22 years, the US has lifted a ban on allowing people with HIV to enter into America.

The ban, initiated at the end of the 80’s came at a time when the HIV pandemic was at a peak of sorts, and meant that nobody with either HIV or AIDS could enter into the country.

President Obama stated that the ban was lifted because it does not represent the stance of the USA when it comes to the ongoing global fight against the disease.

The US was not alone when it came to banning HIV infected travelers from entering the country as 11 other countries also initiated bans.

Since the virus became prevalent, drug makers have been hard at work developing new therapies to treat it.

Although there is currently no cure for HIV/AIDS there are now drugs on the market that do wonderful things when it comes to slowing down the progression of the disease, allowing those infected with it to live normal lives.

how is this possible?

for me this is another Obama victory, I found this SO stupid that it reminded me of the ban for showing dead soldiers returning from their last battlefield... hdbng

It is stupid.  The ban should never have been lifted.  I was surprised to to hear this.  What will happen now?  Even more people will get infected I suppose.

I found that ban ridiculous always (and appointed it to some religiously fueled paranoia, ay the hypocrasy!), given that the infection actually spread into the world from the US in the ´80s. I have been living in my small region (15.000+ ppl) about 50 HIV infected people that I know, this has been so for the last 15+ yrs, and I havent seen/heard any problems about the issue. My wife´s cousin got it and lives and works as a town birgades man with it, my sculpturing teacher has got it and she copes now for about 20 yrs, my direct neighbours son has got it and runs his carpenter business, so what?

I believe this ban has not prevented one infection, everybody getting infected (through sex, that is, not refering to blood transfusions) after 1990 was simply plain stupid , just gotta look at all the American tourists that I see here in Palma riding bareback with Nigerian prostitutes during tourist season to see what I mean... Let Darwin have his way!

But, with Reagan/Bush everything was different... Again, finally simple rationality and common sense have prevailed, better late than never.

That's interesting.  Maybe I'm just a bit phobic about the whole H.I.V.   thing.

I think many people are, can't blame them really,  I mean no one wants to catch it do they?  And as you say, Rattler,  those men that come on vacation to Spain, sleep around with prostitutes and then (probably) go   back to their wives or girlfriends and infect them too back from wherever they came from.   Sad and sickening.

I believe that people with HIV/AIDS do have the right to travel but the problem is, how do you enforce having them

1) Tell their partners about their condition
2) Getting them to use the rubber
Huh?

It's not a silly question.

But considering the huge number of HIV/AIDS infected people in the US, I don't think it'll make that big of a difference.
So, I also support Obama on this move.

WOW!!!

Had no idea about this. Such stupidity is better to happen out my knowledge.

I work in Health system and HIV is just and stigma given to a disease where most of us where made to think is was just affecting homosexuals, drug users and such a kind of people, when reality is so different.

When I was studying medicine in 90´s many university students tested and were +, most of them are actually lawyers, engineers, doctor in whatever, etc.

Have you ever think just kissing an infected partner after a teeth brush is a possibility of getting it (usually we have micro open gingival injuries after brushing teeth, that means blood to blood in an open injurie.

Have you ever think most of us have little injuries in fingers, near nails most of them and when you get contact with any sexual fluid in a masturbation is just contacting virus with and open injurie?

Have you ever think any dermatological lost of skin integrity, just after running, just an infected hair, just a depilation injurie is enough to open a door to HIV, because fluids (vaginal) use to go down preservative to inguinal and escrote zones???

So what?Huh? We should have to become into plastic all ourselves to have any not necesary complete sexual relationship???

By the way, HIV can be in you and not being detected in 6 months in blood tests...

By the way, most people I know actually with HIV are people you will never suspect they are infected.

Won´t you help in an accident a child bleeding in an accident??? Then you shouldn´t, I know many children infected and remember about injuries in hands...are evil open doors...

HIV is just and infection which way of being contagious is simply the same than some liver diseases ( ex: B and C). Actually is probably easier to die by a viral hepatitis C disease than HIV. But you know somebody with BHV is "well seen" and HIV is demonized, what a shit when way of transmission is just the same, simply the luck you got.

And by the way...do you know most the infections in european we notice actually are people with parnert with no other relations out of it which got it from their partners because they where infected long time ago whithout knowing or simply because of an infedility??? Remember blood test do not confirm after 6 months...

Well at least in last test I was (-), health workers use to make test every year at last, but putting and example in my career: Eyes are wide open doors to any kind of infection, are just like open beeding injuries, one day stiching one man an artery was touched and suddenly a blood shot impacted my eyes...man was infected with hepatitis, but we could not know if something else because of that window period for HIV, I was makink test every 3 months for a year. All (-), but I could had been perfectly infected by anything. Accidents similar this in emergencies several a year (all uniform stained with blood...OMG I have a little injurie in arm made this morning at home!!!

So I have thought is better not to live in paranoia, just the prudence knowing risk and thinking if I can get it working...many people as normal as me can get it in such stupid situations as descripted before and suddenly one day they can be demonized for getting simply an allness without knowing how they did it.

Different those who play with fire, and those who are bastards and spreread the disease for being bad. I should have no problem in having a worker with HIV if that is not a risk for others, and for example if they get hurted while working, just advertising don´t contact their blood (if you say you have that potentially lethal C hepatitis, probably nobody will touch you and everybody will think you are a honest man/woman). We stupid human specie.

Cheers and just take care on everythig, but remember there is no 0 risk, even using preservatives or whatever. If anytime have played lotto is that you have thought minimum statistics could smile you, so if it´s possible for good, so can do it for bad

thx for sharing and paranoia is indeed what I think off when I read your story, I think that humans are unable too protect themselves from ALL deceases and infections....unless we want to wear a 100% covered protection and live isolated...and even then we won't be safe with airborne threats and more...

WRONG!!  hihi

There is a solution, and it has been invented by the Germans some 10+ years ago, they even branded the word for it: "Ganzkörperkondom GKK 99" (translates to "Full Body Condom" in English), here a prototype currently field tested with German soldiers in the Stan:

As always, it seems the greatest German inventions are constantly being ignored by the the mayor part of the rest of the planet and hence we and our allies will probably have to face losing just another war...  hihi

Rattler

P.S.: UPDATE, latest news: For some reasons the army did not seem to want to go on with the above shown design, they claim the soldiers look "less attractive than they really are" (?? attractive soldiers? In Germany??) and now opt for a different model where the body outlines are more visible, and which from the procurement process seems to be a lot less cost heavy as the industry can rely on proven and tested fabrication techniques, the "GKK 01":
