Welcome to War and Tactics!    War and Tactics Forum is currently undergoing some modifications that might disable features you are used to. This is unabvoidable as we have to update the forum engine to a new structure that is incompatible with many of the features we had used so far. The good news: WaT will be more secure and stable, and most of the features we uninstalled will be a natural part of the new structure anyway. For the rest we will be looking for solutions. a very sad day...

Quote
(CNN) -- Two people have been shot and killed at a courthouse in Brussels, Belgium, police and Belgian news outlets said Thursday.

Police said only that there were two victims and that a news conference was planned for 2 p.m. (8 a.m. ET).

The victims were a female judge who was close to retirement and a court clerk, broadcaster VRT reported. Both were shot in the head, VRT said.

A nearby school was evacuated as the manhunt continued, VRT said.

here in Belgium we have, next to the normal judges, a special kind of judges.

those special judges are very close to the public an take care of the small issues: neighbour problems mostly...

they are called 'judges of peace'.... in this case a 'judge of peace' got murdered...

this is SO wrong  Kwaad

BBC News - Female judge and clerk shot dead in court in Belgium

Quote
A female magistrate and a court clerk have been shot dead in a courtroom in the Belgian capital.

A lone gunman opened fire in a building near the main Palais de Justice in Brussels at about 1115 (0915 GMT).

Belgian media identified the dead justice of the peace as Isabelle Brandon and clerk Andre Bellemans, who were presiding over a civil tribunal.

A search is under way for the gunman - who was reported to be injured - after he fled the scene on foot.

Officials said the attacker had attended a morning session, but no immediate details were given about his identity or possible motive.

"He was present at the outset of the hearing," said Jean-Marc Meilleur of the Brussels prosecutor's office.

"Toward the end of the session, he pulled a gun. Shots were fired, after which the killer fled."

'Critical level'

Police have sealed off surrounding streets, and issued warnings to shoppers and tourists to go indoors.

Justice Minister Stefaan De Clerck said this was the first time in Belgian judicial history that a magistrate has been killed in the middle of a court hearing, state broadcaster RTBF reported.

He said that security would be stepped up, but not to expect closed rooms and CCTV everywhere, as "justice should be about proximity to people".

Lawyers and judges have held a minute's silence for the victims in front of the Palais de Justice.

A lawyer who works at the court, Pierre Brimeyer, told AP: "We have been witnessing increasing levels of violence and tension in the Palais de Justice for years.

"Incidents have happened before and now we have reached a critical level."

Same in Germany and Spain (and we took this from the Anglosaxon model of the "Justice of the peace", another argument on why our model is more flexible).

I do not know what is going on in the world lately (and by this I mean since 1963+ or so), every time I look news get more disturbing (but as I grow older I get accustomed until the next higher level of lunacy is reached). This case as well as the recent British Amok really calls me to re-read some of the books of John Brunners, especially "Stand on Zanzibar" (published in ´68 and - as SF in that time - dealing with 2010) where he predicted that the "Mokkers" (Brunners slang for Amok Killers) are playing a significant role in the societey he imagined for our time.

Sorry to hear your mishap and feeling for the victims, some people are just out of the range of what we can grab with a more or less sane mind (but there must be a reason, I presume, why they *are* out of our mental reach for starters, we need to invesitgate this if we want to stop it, methinks).

the killer got arrested later that day in Brussels, he's a naturalized Iranian with Belgian passport.

Seems that he was set out of his home some years ago after a dispute with the owner.

The murdered judge signed the order.

Police also told us that he had several problems in the past and convictions for agression.

We hear som much bad news that most news only grabs us for a couple of minutes but this really shakes my head. These judges are their to HELP people fast and easy.

What should a civilized country do now?

It's impossible to protect a big court in Brussels! And it wouldn't help, when the protection inside would ever be 100% they would attack outside of the courthouse.

What's going on?
