Petition asks Obama to OK hands in pockets

Troops are petitioning the White House to lift the services’ bans on hands in pockets — and if enough people sign it, your commander in chief could respond (28.000 signings)...

The military forbids soldiers from putting their hands in their pockets while in uniform. Nearly 1,500 people filed a petition addressing this issue, for safety reasons:

"We hold these truths to be self-evident," it vows, "that all uniforms have pockets, and hands fit perfectly inside them, and they sheathe our knife hands gloriously. It must be acknowledged that placing one's hands in one's pockets is not a sign of disrespect, but a precautionary action to prevent injuries."

As far as this correspondent knows there is no petition filed asking that male military personnel be allowed to carry umbrellas while in uniform, which also forbidden but could be safety relevant.
