Welcome to War and Tactics!    War and Tactics Forum is currently undergoing some modifications that might disable features you are used to. This is unabvoidable as we have to update the forum engine to a new structure that is incompatible with many of the features we had used so far. The good news: WaT will be more secure and stable, and most of the features we uninstalled will be a natural part of the new structure anyway. For the rest we will be looking for solutions. U-34 may refer to one of the following German submarines:

    * SM U-34, was a Type U 31 submarine launched in 1914 and that served in the First World War; disappeared after 18 October 1918
o During the First World War, Germany also had these submarines with similar names:
+ SM UB-34, a Type UB II submarine launched in 1915 and surrendered on 26 November 1918
+ SM UC-34, a Type UC II submarine launched in 1916 and scuttled on 30 October 1918

    * German submarine U-34 (1936), a Type VIIA submarine that served in the Second World War until sunk on 5 August 1943

    * German submarine U-34 (S184), a Type 212 submarine of the Bundesmarine that was launched in 2006 and in service as of 17 January 2008

The German Type 212 is a highly advanced design of non-nuclear submarine (U-Boat) developed by Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft AG (HDW) for the German Navy. It features diesel propulsion and an additional air-independent propulsion (AIP) system using Siemens proton exchange membrane (PEM) hydrogen fuel cells. The submarine can operate at high speed on diesel power or switch to the AIP system for silent slow cruising, staying submerged for up to three weeks without surfacing and with no exhaust heat. The system is also said to be vibration-free, extremely quiet and virtually undetectable.

Type 212 is the first of the only two fuel cell propulsion system equipped submarines ready for series production by 2007, the other being the Project 677 Lada class submarine designed by Russian Rubin Design Bureau.
