In English, 'SMG' would be 'sub-machine gun'; is that what this means, too?  (schiesst scharf='shoots sharply')
Anyway, a nice real photo postcard picture showing the base, ammo box to the side and crew of 3.  This postcard was mailed April 29, 1939.

The "S" here is for "schwer" (= heavy), so SMG is "Heavy Machine Gun".

No clue what weapo your card shows, as it is water cooled I guess it is pre-war, probably the MG 08 (MG 34 being the standard MG at war start, replaced later by the MG 42), but this would qualify it as LMG (light machine gun)

I wonder what is the purpose of the round disk, just behind the muzzle?
Could it be flash or blast protection for the crew?
