Welcome to War and Tactics!    War and Tactics Forum is currently undergoing some modifications that might disable features you are used to. This is unabvoidable as we have to update the forum engine to a new structure that is incompatible with many of the features we had used so far. The good news: WaT will be more secure and stable, and most of the features we uninstalled will be a natural part of the new structure anyway. For the rest we will be looking for solutions. In the same list above you can see that the word Churchill is misspelled for the A22 and Challenger for the A30.

It's the attention to detail that should be setting this site apart from others. If you post something make it worth reading and not just something to increase your post count.

spelling errors? well, it happens...it only takes a pm or email to let us know and we correct it!

post count? who cares for post count at WaT? I don't and I'm quite sure most of the others don't...furthermore...since the A-Z posts are closed they need to be modified to include new stuff and modifying posts doesn't count in your post count so what's the fuzz about?

The heerestruppen error is my fault.
These were independent army units that were part of an ss formation.
Anyone can make mistakes.
A private message or email is enough to correct the issue I think.

AA - Anti-aircraft. Usually this means anti-aircraft guns.

AAA - Anti-aircraft Artillery. This means any gun designed to shoot down planes.

AFV - Armoured Fighting Vehicle. Any vehicle that has had armour plating added for protection.

AG - Assault Gun. Any vehicle designed to support infantry operations by large caliber cannon fire.

AGB - Assault Gun Brigade. This is a formation of the German Army where 36 - 48 assault guns are grouped together for concentration of force.

AP - Armour Piercing. Punches a hole in the armour plate using the speed and mass of the shell.

APFSDS - Armour Piercing Fin Stabilized Discarding Sabot. This is an APDS round with fins added to the penetrator. Normally the penetrator is a substance like tungsten.

APDS - Armour Piercing Discarding Sabot, This shell has a sabot formed around the penetrator that drops off when fired from the gun. The smaller penetrator itself then adds the Kinetic Energy from the sabot to it's own speed and increases the speed at which the penetrator flies and strikes the target. The higher speed coupled with a small dense penetrator results in increased penetration.

ATGM - Anti-tank Guided Missile. The missile is being directed to the target instead of being fired and the projectile flies undirected. Means of directing the missile can vary. The missile can be directed by signals from the firing by an attached wire or by wireless means, some are optically guided.

BMP - pronounced "bump", the first generation of Soviet Infantry Combat Vehicles produced as the BMP-1, BMP-2 and BMP-3. Each version an improvement over the previous versions.

FLOT - Foward Line of Troops. Where the forward edge of friendly troops are deployed.

HEAT - High Explosive Anti-tank. HEAT rounds use the Morrow Effect, which involves the detonation of a high explosive shell at a preset distance from the target armour plate. The shell is designed with a conical hollow charge inside which when detonated focusses the explosion into a high-speed jet of material which burns it's way through the armour plating. The normal penetratoin factor is five times the depth in armour plating for the diameter of the HEAT round. Once it has burned through the armour then the molten material of the penetration jet acts like any other round that penetrates the AFV.

HESH - High Explosive Squash Head. The shell consists of a
large amount of HE with a base fuze. This is encased in a thin steel case. On hitting the target the explosive flattens against it (squashes) the target and is then detonated. The shock generates enough force to knock off pieces of the armour inside the target vehicle. This effect is known as spalling. The spalling becomes projectiles on the inside of the vehicle creating crew casualties. The exterior explosion is also sufficiently powerful to do considerable damage to the target vehicle and if less than an MBT could destroy the target vehicle by itself.

ICV - Infantry Combat Vehicle. A vehicle designed to support soldiers in combat with weapons systems and not just deliver them to the battlefield and withdraw.

JATO - Jet Assisted Take Off. Some aircraft have disposable jets added to the wings and fuselage to give them an extra boost of power at takeoff to allow them to use much shorter take off distances.

MBT - Main Battle Tank. A heavily armoured and armed vehicle with tracks, normally armed with a large cannon in a  turret capable of firing in a 360 degree arc.

RAP - rocket assisted projectile, this is a system that adds rocket propulsion to an artillery shell to give it greater range without increasing the powder charge or the size of the projectile.

SPA - Self Propelled Artillery. Any artillery gun that is on some kind of a vehicle mount making it mobile.

Spalling - When a projectile strikes the hard armour of an AFV it can cause the armour to break apart. The shock generates enough force to knock off pieces of the armour inside the target vehicle. This effect is known as spalling. The spalling becomes projectiles on the inside of the vehicle creating crew casualties.

Good Hunting.

I question the need to discuss the shortcomings of the site in this forum. We have an admin board where constructive criticisms would be appropriately addressed and resolved without having the innocent visitor having to wade through our dirty laundry.

Well, if you feel the need that greatly then start the thread and we'll move the discussion.

Good Hunting.

Here a list of NATOPS (Naval Air Training and Operating) abbreviations and acronyms in relation to mil/naval aviation, some specifically concerning the Harrier (sorry for the dots after the acronyms, I guess you will have to delete them before posting, but at least I organized them alphabetically already (though there are quite a few doubles with what we have already, you might want to couble check them (e.g. ROE, ATC, WPN, etc.).

I currently dont have the time for that, just had the chance to copy them from a friend and could not select). So, a bit of work for you (I recommend you dont just copy and paste, but take them bit by bit and read/double check them, many doubles are there in different writing rule). In those latter cases, (like e.g. "A/A" for the "AA" we have already, maybe an adddtion like e.g. "(NATOPS) would be appropriate to make clear where the different take comes from, dont forget we are compling all those acronyms from different sources who each have thier own rules on how to display/write stuff.

On 2nd thoughts: For the dots, maybe in Word or something similar you could exchange the "." for a ":" to follow your directions of the last post?
