2nd Infantry Division in WWII

"Warriors" Second to None

Warrior Division


The Second Infantry Division is the only division in the history of the United States Army to be formed on foreign soil. Formed at Beaumont, France on October 26, 1917.

 In 1940 it became the first division to convert from a "square" command to a "triangular" command giving up her two Marine Regiments buy gaining the 38th Infantry Regiment (Bearing the motto "The Rock of the Marne"), from the Third Infantry Division. 


In October 1943 the division was deployed to Ireland in preparation for the upcoming allied invasion of Europe. On D-Day +1, the division stormed ashore at Omaha Beach .

The Second Division was in every major action of World War Two and VE Day saw the division in Pilsen, Czechoslovakia. The Second Infantry Division arrived at Ft. Swift, Tx. on July 22, 1945 to began training for a possible invasion of Japan. World War Two ended before the division could be sent to the Pacific. All in all, the division participated in the Normandy, Northern France, the Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace, and the Central Europe Campaigns of World War Two. The Division suffered 3,031 killed in action and 12,785 wounded in action during that war.
