Welcome to War and Tactics!    War and Tactics Forum is currently undergoing some modifications that might disable features you are used to. This is unabvoidable as we have to update the forum engine to a new structure that is incompatible with many of the features we had used so far. The good news: WaT will be more secure and stable, and most of the features we uninstalled will be a natural part of the new structure anyway. For the rest we will be looking for solutions. Was a bad rule IMHO anyways.

If I were your opponent, I wouldn't find that funny. Onbeslist
2  NCO Club: Off Topic Discussions / The Lab: Science & Technology / Re: What NOT to buy? on: 13 February 2009, 19:31:01
I bought a new rig half a year ago, with a nVidia GTX260 graphics card and Vista 64. I added Windows XP to create a dual boot system, with the intention to stick to Vista and only use XP for legacy purposes. However while I could play all CM versions alright under Vista, the game files didn't end up where you expect them since Vista doesn't like CM's behavior to write them into a sub-directory of your "Program Files" directory and silently creates a shadow directory per user. Which in turn made PBEMH unusable, a tool that I have learned to love.

In the end, I am now using XP for almost everything and only go for Vista to play DirectX 10 games.

Regarding fog, the nVidia card shows it; a while ago ATI cards didn't, but I'm not sure whether some new drivers solved that issue.

These are great maps! However, the subject is way too restrictive as the thread includes many more maps than just the initial attack on Russia.

A little nitpicking on the spelling of the German ranks (changed ones are in bold - for Waffen-SS all ranks have been updated to include the umlaut ü in ...führer):

Wehrmacht/Heer/Luftwaffe (German Army and Airforce)

1) Reichsmarschall / Oberfeldwebel
2) Generalfeldmarschall / Feldwebel
3) - / Fähnrich
4) - / Unterfeldwebel

6) General der Infantrie, der Flieger, etc. / Stabsgefreiter and Hauptgefreiter
7) Generalleutnant / Obergefreiter
8.) Generalmajor / Gefreiter
9) - / -
10) Oberst / Oberschütze

However, there is no direct correlation between point count  and scenario size for one thing nor does it directly correlate to more points meaning more playing time.  What counts the most for playing time is unit count.
[...]Don't look at point count...look at unit count.

Yep. 2 infantry batallions = "too large" (my subjective view); 3 veteran Panther platoons = "no problem" (again my subjective view)  Grijns
8  Wargaming / Combat Mission: The Masters Tournament / Re: Round 2 Discussion Thread on: 18 January 2009, 01:06:21
I could stay in if we play only the two smaller scenarios, but I won't play the big one (or another big one later on) regardless of whether the deadline is three month or six.

But then I'm already out as I've already announced my withdrawal. Smiley

Btw. I found a replacement inside my club (currently under evaluation by Steve) to play against Antoni.

My opponent has dropped out ! :'(

Still he did it before we got started so I cant complain !

Yup, that was me who dropped out. The "BF-Forgotten Ground" is just way too large for me. I'm currently playing a similarily sized battle in a wBoB tournament, and doing the turns sometimes is more like work than like fun, so I don't want to add another one like that to my list.

I apologize all around and especially to Antoni and Steve.

Good luck to all!
10  Wargaming / The Scenarios / Re: Round 1 Scenario I Woke Up Dead on: 5 January 2009, 21:55:16
I pre-plotted my arty strike for turn 10 so that I would catch the Soviet troops approaching the church,

You're not one who likes to follow rules given in the briefing, like the one about "NO DELAY" given three times (!) on pages 1, 3 and 4 of the briefing, eh?  Rollende ogen  :'(
11  Wargaming / The Scenarios / Re: Round 1 Scenario Throne of Glory on: 5 January 2009, 21:49:39
The PZR III longs are more than ample enough to deal with the vals and T-34's...

I disagree. Only the Tungsten ammo can touch a T34, especially when it's higher than the PzIII. Unfortunately, the PzIII had very few T ammo.

T34 driving under bridge:

T34 jumps onto top of bridge with full LOS from up there:
14  Wargaming / The Scenarios / Re: Round 1 Scenario Thunder at Banya Pass on: 3 January 2009, 13:33:46
Unfortunately, my game hasn't ended yet, so I can't assess how easily half a dozen T34s can slice through Hungarian butter. Smiley

- unusual forces (at least for the Axis player) - very nice
- map which allows bypassing, but at the price of passing through rocky areas - nice, though I personally hate rocky ground because it makes plotting from any view but 1 or 2 very hard
- both players get to attack - nice
- briefing urges the Axis to rush, which is a very good advice; without that info, I might have arrived in Benya when the T34s were already there - good

For me this is a really good scenario (as much as I can assess it without having seen the scenario file or having finished it Knipoog), easily the best of the three.

Improvement ideas:
- While CM gurus may already know that rocky ground and trucks don't mix well, it may be worthwhile to disrecommend against driving trucks through rocky ground - I knew it takes longer, but didn't understand that it takes AGES to cross just one tile.
- I had two tanks bog and get immobilized on open ground (of course far away from the action Tong). That came as a surprise to me because the ground conditions seemd ok. If this is a systematic issue, it might be worth mentioning in the briefing as well.
15  Wargaming / The Scenarios / Re: Round 1 Scenario Throne of Glory on: 3 January 2009, 13:25:23
This seemed very much like an "uphill battle" for the Axis to me. Allies can fire steep downhill while the Axis tanks seem to have difficulties to fire steep uphill (and that is without the height disadavantage of hitting something thin on the vehicle top).

The bridge glitch then did it for me.

The idea is nice, but I got the impression that the Allies have too much power compared to the Axis forces.
16  Wargaming / The Scenarios / Re: Round 1 Scenario I Woke Up Dead on: 3 January 2009, 13:22:52
I'm only in the middle since my opponent had to slow down for RL reasons (I'm firmly holding the church, and his troops never made it closer than 50m or so before being sent back), but here are my thoughts so far anyway (based on the assumption that no side suddenly gets some sort of heavy HE thrower or artillery):

- map fits the story - nice
- trench system gives a good WW1 feeling, though it's mainly decoration - nice
- whoever gets to the church first will hold it and win (I can't assess whether the Allies have a general advantage here  or whether it was just our game, but I managed to be there one full turn before him) - bad

Unfortunately, the third point dominates the other two.

Maybe if there were two or three such heavy buildings in the middle, so that it was not so obvious where to send reinforcements?
17  Wargaming / Masters Tournament: General Discussion Area / Re: Posted Results? on: 14 December 2008, 00:05:13
Given the deadline is only three days away, it is now very unlikely that peek and I will finish on time as our file exchange rate degraded to a crawl about a month ago . About 14 turns to play at Benya and more on the moon. Please advice what to do about the situation.
