Practical example how to get soldiers to choose for the same option and to act as 1.
We have candybars named Nuts and Mars.
A sergeant had a bag full of Nuts candybars.
He had the platoon in front of him and said to them, "time to choose, do you want a Mars or a Nuts?"
About 60% of them were smart and choose for the Nuts, the others liked the Mars more.
However, Mars is Dutch for marching.
So he gave the men who asked for the Nuts the candybars.
The others had to take their weapons and gear and went out for a 20 km walk Smiley
Needless to say some of them were very angry about the others.

German Version, HauptFeld addressing the coy:

"Everybody who knows to ride a motorcycle, one step forward!"

5 or so came forward, to receive the order (delivered with a hint of a sarcastic smile): "Ok, off to the kitchen guys, they need 8 tons of potatos peeled, and pronto...!

Nobody ever again  felt he had to show off to his mates, and everybody practiced the "indifferent, slighly questional" look as response to such quests...

Lesson Learned: In peace time, *never* volunteer for *anything*...  whistle
