Knife

what I need?

usable as self-defence

was thinking of:
Walther Subcompanion
Walther TacKnife

Walther SubCompanion knife

Walther Blacktac

Flashlight

what I need?

I own a SLP (Leatherman derivate, have it on the boat), served me well and combines the things you require, methinks:

http://gadgets.boingboing.net/2007/09/05/slp-survival-knife-w.html

If you need it smaller, there is also a Mini foldable flashlight knife (with signal whistle), but not as good for self defense (OTOH I wuould not recommend knife self defense if you dont exactly know what you are doing):

http://www.amazon.com/Tool-Logic-SL1M-Tactical-Flashlight/dp/B0015RISTM

They have various options of different sizes and gadgets (I would buy SL3 or the rescue knife if I had to do it again today):

http://www.shop4leatherman.co.uk/survival_knives_rescue_knives.html

BTW, and off topic, I think the plural of knife is "knives", but not sure.

Forgot to say, of course it has clip and can be carried in the pocket also, but what I find more important (peaceful guy I am) is the hole in the blade, quite unique, which enables it to cut soft cheese (something to have on the boat with a bottle of red wine and bread) without sticking.

some extra info:

where do I need the knife and flashlight for?

1. we live in a small forest with some 7 houses in a dead-end street, there is NO lighting on the street neither do we have neighbours
so it's pitchdark and quite

2. away with the camper we camp on abandoned places and I need to take the dog out wherever we are... the dog is a good guardian but he sees more then I can in the dark

I do have maglites but they are too big

in both cases I need LIGHT to see where I'm going & what's around me
the knife is there when for I would need it, not for show, not for taking stands or such... only for emergency cases

set of knife + compass: Walther set

transport costs are too ridiculous: 17€ to send a 30€ knife?

In military dumps you can buy a small light with 9 little ledlights.
I have one too, it produces a lot of light.
It will light up everything in front of you within 15 meters.
Another nice thing is that when you put it on and shine a guy into his face he wont see anything for a few minutes.
I have it attached under my rifle at night when on duty.

There isnt a name for a company written on it, so I cant tell you who made it Bedroefd
But when you see it you will recognize it at once.
Its about 10 cm long, with AAA batteries and its black.

LOl, I never saw vibrators from 10 cm long Knipoog

And yes its quite different from normal flashlights.
Go to your local dumpstore, they will have a few flashlights.
Ask for the small and blinding one, they show you the model I mentioned.

ok, thx

it's not so easy to find specialized shops, wrote an email to Fenix complaining that most of their 'Belgian shops' links are dead. They apologized and directed me to http://www.belprotect.be/midden.htm

sometimes I AM surprised that in 2011 firms have websites which are full of dead links and not-up-to-date news...

encountered several websites telling me they are closed between X-mas and NewYear.................. 2010-2011....  hdbng

Koen, take a loog here, a complete list of all kinds of flashlights  and articles about their use.

While I dont understand yet why a tac knife with inbuilt flashlight does not fit your needs as described in the first post, if you want a separate flashlight I recommend one that can strobe and so disorientate and disable an attacker.

Example: http://www.policemag.com/Channel/Weapons/Products/2010/12/High-Strobe-Flashlight-Tailcap.aspx

quite simple, when I go on a walk with the dog I don't want to walk around constantly with a (drawn) knife in my hands.

first I use my flashlight to 'see', only when needed I can take my knife (still folded) with my flashlight between my teeth, dog in one hand, knife in the other (hidden)

also, the dog is strong so sometimes while using the light I need to change hands, much easier with a smallsized (but powerful) light

the Fenix LD20 has a strobo feature (61€ at a Belgian shop)

I dont know why you have to walk on the street with a knife.
Keep in mind (free law enforcement advise!!) when you stab somebody with a knife which isnt for kitchenuse you are committing a crime.
Btw same goes for using a large maglite, the law has already been changed and regard a maglite as a weapon.

Like Matt said, the latest flaslights are so powerfull that the disorientate or temporarily blind any opponent.
This gives you time to walk away which is always a better option.

Errmm... Just for the record, the knife/flashlight combo I mentioned above in reply #1 is a *folding* knife, and when folded makes for a very handy flashlight. you can open it with one finger pressing on the release, so dont need two hands in case you need it, and you fdont even move the flashlight beam.

Again, this just for the record, ealking around with a knife in idea of self defense is something I dont recommend: Flashlight in one hand, dog in the other, where goes the knife? Also, if you drop the light you will be night blind. Last, you only have one stab against a even only slightly trained agressor.

Better in those cases to blind the guy, switch off the light, let the dog go and hide (in the FSK we had this instructor who always urged us to not carry a pistol, because it would make us miss the moment when to run and hide, thats why we only had one per troop of 4).

Better yet to walk without a flashlight: After 6 minutes your eyes (if you dont live in the city) will have adapted to the light enough to discern your path (except for days like today with almost total new moon), and you have the advantage of using the flashlight only to blind (then you close 1 eye to avoid getting night blind totally: This is why the pirates used eye flap: So they could change from on deck to below deck without losing vision as they could swap eyes; contrary to the legend they mostly had two eyes Smiley).

If you are looking for a strobe, check the lumens and the frequency, only very strong (160+) lumen have the desired effect.

FWIW,

Rattler

the reason why I want these 2 subjects is not for a walk at home

it's when we go for  a walk somewhere in the middle of nowhere in France (remember K&K have a plan to drive the complete French coast during the remains of our lives....)

I'm not the aggresive type who wants to USE the knive, neither do I want to show it.

I know about the darkness and 'sight'. I always wait to start the walk until my eyes are used to the (abscence) of light.

So both things are only to be used 'when needed'. When I/we feel attacked.

Just keep in mind that a criminal can kill you for something like a pack of sigarets, remember the student in Brussel who was stabbed because he wouldnt  gave up his Ipod?
If you draw a knife it can have consequences, below are the most common things that can happen when you draw a knife on a criminal:
An opponent will attack you at once when you make the move to reach for it.
An opponent will take the knife from you when you dont use it and will stab you with it.

Above is what I learned on the street, remember I grew up in a very criminal neighbourhood and sopent a lot of time with the supporters from Ajax hardcore group.
Instead of a knife I suggest you go to a sporting school and inform about Krav Maga.
