Heeresgruppe Kurland was created on 25 January 1945, when Adolf Hitler renamed Heeresgruppe Nord, Heeresgruppe Mitte, and Heeresgruppe A.
Hitler's name changes meant that Heeresgruppe Nord became Heeresgruppe Kurland, Heeresgruppe Mitte became Heeresgruppe Nord and Heeresgruppe A became Heeresgruppe Mitte.
