Welcome to War and Tactics, the forum for discussions of warfare through the times.
Hello Guest, welcome to the War and Tactics (WaT) forum, have a look around!

'War and Tactics' is dedicated to 2000+ years of warfare and history.

It is our goal to create one site where everybody can find and share info about armed conflicts and other historical events from the past and the present.  Who did what? Why? How? Are wars necessary? Do wars express what human nature is like? Do we profit from them, and then how? Can we improve, professionally as soldiers, as race or as species?

Apart from this "on-topic" stuff we also share/discuss more personal and relaxed stuff (see our NCO Club´s "off-topic" discussions after clicking on "Forum"): There's not many limits to what we want to discuss, the "How" has the same importance as the "Why", and any sensible input is much welcome...

We invite you to work on our dream together with us, we actually can use every help we can get for our project (click on the "Forum" button above to see what we have already, or where to post your insights): If you have any information to share, be it about a certain time period, OOB's, Armies, Battles, Equipment or anything else you are gladly invited to register and share this information with us. Or, you have an opinion to share, apart from the plain facts? You´re most welcome to do so also (but keep it civil please).

You have doubts and/or questions? Please do not hesitate to contact us!

Via PM gave 3 days to latest member micael2071 to explain the contradiction of his location (IP Pakistan) and his claimed nationality (UK).

TechAdmin, thanks for the detailed explanation. That works.

If for security reasons we won't show the correct IP location then why show that information on the site at all?

Because wargamers are quite frequently in need to know their IP (to connect to gaming servers, or, like in TacOps to inform their opponent in a H2H, e.g.). Instead of having to search for their IP elsewhere we display it for all our users` convenience here: The IP is correct, even if the location displayed might not be.

If for security reasons we won't show the correct IP location then why show that information on the site at all? Just asking not flaming....

To sum it up: The *location assigned* to the IP your provider asiigned to you is the location we display, of your provider, not yours. Your *displayed IP is correct*, though (and the reason we have this gadget).
25 January 2012, 19:08:03
For privacy reasons we take and display the location of the IP that your provider assigns to you. Sometimes this may be correct, sometimes not fully (especially when you, like me, are with a big provider): Whenever I visit an adult site I get seemingly "personal" invitations from chicks along the line "Oh, you are in Madrid also? Lets meet!", just because my (big) provider Telefonica has the originating IP in Madrid (I am not in Madrid but on a Med Island currently). We could use a "trace route" and display personal IPs locs, but as the chicks (and their bots) are just waiting for this to spam you we have decided we wont.

It shows me in Bellevue, Washington instead of Texas. I guess that means it's not showing correctly for my location.
25 January 2012, 07:19:17
it is showing and correct for my location

Just FYI: Have taken over from NewsMan since 2D and for the near future, he is on a skiing vacation and cannot do the stuff himself every day (but also commented to me he will have a "crazy!" personal article in within the day as he has time at night to write up stuff if his Admiral allows). TA
